See my scoping comments from 2010, attached. In it I indicate trout throughout the project, requesting the
moratorium, and also mention concerns about wildlife crossing a much wider roadway. This is also a safety
concern for the traveling public and I recommended wildlife crossings along the project in the form of bridges,
overpasses and underpasses. The Laurel Fork crossing should be looked at as potential site for a bridge which
will also serve as a wildlife crossing and possibly have another benefit of public access, which benefits tourism
and the local community. I also dug up Concurrence meeting summary from the 3/14/2012 meeting, attached,
which indicated 7locations where 6 or accidents occurred from Broadstone Rd. to SR 1107 (2006-2009). The
Laurel Fork crossing is within that area, near SR 1107. I don't know if any of these accidents involve wildlife,
but would like more info on that. Stream corridors are known to also be wildlife corridors in many cases, and I
would think this would be no exception.
I believe we need to take a harder look at a bridge for the Laurel Fork crossing. I intend to visit in the next
week, as I have plans to be in the area. Pm also checking with our biologists and may have further comments.

Attached are fish data for Laurel Fork our follcs have collected at a location about 1000' upstream of its
confluence with the Watauga River. The most recent data are from 2008. Marla may have more recent data.

Hi All,
After looking at the packet, I have a couple of questions regarding the decision to extend the 3x culvert on
Laurel Fork I can't tell from the pictures, but is that culvert currently allowing passage? If it is not, can
passage be restored with a culvert extension? The other question I have is what is the quality of Laurel
Fork? are there currently trout?
thanks marella
