Deny permits to transport and store coal ash in the Colon clay pits in Lee county. This waste problem could be safely
solved using the salt stone process on site where the toxic ash exists now.
Sending coal ash to Lee county will have adverse effects on at least one public park and numerous locally owned
businesses in Sanford.
Depot Park is situated between the two main rail tracks that run through downtown Sanford. Currently 10,000 to
15,000 patrons attend outdoor activities throughout the year such as the Summer Concert Series, Movie in the Park,
Farmer's Markets, and various other city and county sponsored events. Children are encouraged to play in the fountain
area free of charge. For many it is the only "water park" they have ever seen.
In its fourteen year history, Depot Park has been the site of many memorable celebrations such as New Year's Eve, July
Fourth, and weddings.
Aptly named, the park is in close proximity to a railway, but Depot Park is so close, contamination is not only possible,
but absolutely probable if coal ash is aboard.
It is unimaginable that citizens could relax under the stars with their families while breathing polluted air and carrying
polluted ground home with them.
The small shops and restaurants across the tracks surrounding the park have always had to contend with rail traffic
delays, but if toxic ash moves on those tracks, many possible customers will avoid the area completely, taking revenue
elsewhere.
Please deny these permits that will allow adverse effects to our downtown businesses and popular park.
The following picture shows just how close the trains are to the band pavilion and lawn seating.
