Subject: Coal ash dump in Chatham
Coal ash should be regulated as a hazardous waste; it contains heavy metals and toxins that will leach into the
water and blow in the air. Duke just got fined for polluting our water with its waste, and in 20 years the fly ash
dumped on us in Chatham will become a problem for ground water and the towns down stream of it along
with Jordan Lake. It will have to be cleaned up again then. Plastic liners cannot contain it.
Why not keep it on Duke's sites and encase in concrete or some how solidify these tons of toxic coal ash rather
than transport it to our county, polluting yet another location?
What is the cost of containing it in solid state on Duke's property vs. the cost of transporting it to our county
and later having to clean that up? Plus the untold costs to the community's health?
Don't dump coal ash in Chatham or Lee.
