I am against the permitting of coal ash waste being trucked in and stored in into Chatham County and Lee County. Please do not approve these permits. Here are some reasons why to not allow the toxic coal ash dumping or dumps at the Brickhaven and Colon Road sites: 1. It's not really a "mine reclamation ". It is simply a coal ash landfill, and it's not protecting people or the water the way a landfill would be required to do. 2. The liners are at best warranted for 20 years. They will fail sooner or later. They haven't been tested for storing coal ash. 3. Chatham and Lee's economies will suffer and property values will go down. 4. Transportation by truck and rail will further contaminate (from dust off the trucks and railcars) homes, businesses, farms, schools and churches along the way. 5. Coal ash is TOXIC and full of heavy metals known to harm humans! The leachate will contaminate the ground water supply and will end up in the Cape Fear river - further poison more counties in NC. 6. The toxins in coal cash CAN'T be removed by conventional water treatments or filters. You are poisoning more people by allowing the storage of this toxic waste. 6. A lot of secondary roads will be used by trucks, adding more heavy traffic to Moncure - Pittsboro, Old #1, and Corinth Rds, also Business 64 between Pittsboro and Siler City with likelihood of accidents. I counted tractor trailers at 3 PM April 16. 5 of them and 31 cars and pickups, in 10 min. 7. This has been rushed through and has not been done legally. Please do not allow Duke Energy to also poison areas where the waste was not created! 8. You are the Department of Energy and Natural Resources. It is your job to protect our states natural resources. PROTECT THEM. As a tax payer and land owner in NC - I demand that you fulfill this duty to the future of our state and protect everyone from moving these volatile toxins to areas in NC. 9. Charah is not even based in NC. By allowing them to govern toxic waste dumps in our state we are allowing outside entities to poison us - for their own gain - not for our state's or the citizens of NC. Thank you for DENYING the permits to Duke Energy and their associated parties. MJ Copeland 75 Altadore Cres Rd Moncure, NC 27559
