The City of Asheboro Water/Sewer Maintenance Department received a call on November 29th, 2021 about a
strong sewer odor and water in the creek was discolored near the address of 427 Highland Ct. The Water/Sewer
Maintenance Department's investigator responded immediately. The Investigator began checking and searching the
area for any issues that may have caused the smell. He found the problem was that manhole # 3073 was overflowing.
He called a crew in to unstop the sewer immediately.
The crew arrived and used a Vactor combination truck to run a jetter nozzle into MH# 4826 towards MH# 3073.
We hit a stoppage at 7' down the line and when we pulled back we got an excess amount of rags from the mains
blockage. When the sewer dropped out, we ran a camera into the main to find that the blockage was gone but we
found some root intrusion in the joints of the pipe. The following day we sent a crew with a root cutter and camera to
remove the roots until the main was clear of all obstructions. We ran 2 fire hydrant for 9 hours to clean up the creek.
The crew put out 50 lbs. of lime around the manhole where the sewer came in contact with the ground. We contacted
the City of Asheboro Technical Services and they distributed "Toilets are not Trashcans" door hangers to the properties
in the area.
The City of Asheboro requests that the NCDENR refrain from taking any enforcement action as a result of this
incident. The Water/Sewer Maintenance Department displayed a prompt response time. There was no environmental
