Snider, Assistant Regional Supervisor Water Quality Regional Operations 450 West Hanes Mill Road, Suite 300 Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27105 Dear Mr. Snider, NC Department of Environmental quality Received AUG 0 5 2020 t Winston-Salem Regional Office This letter is in response to the Notice of Violation and Recommendation for Enforcement Letter dated July 14, 2020 received by the City of Greensboro. The address where the violation occurred and the amount spilled is shown below: 1. 1619 Stanley Rd. 3000 Gallons The sanitary sewer release at 1619 Stanley Rd. was due to debris accumulation in the sanitary sewer from unblocking a sanitary sewer release at 1617 Stanley Rd. A combination jet truck was dispatched to unstop the blockage and clean the line. Once the sanitary sewer overflow was stopped, we thoroughly cleaned all lines in the area to ensure we could perform a CCTV inspection of the line to see if further action will be needed to be taken to prevent future debris accumulation. Upon inspection, we found the lines to be heavily corroded and restricted from mineral deposits that contributed to the debris accumulation. Upon seeing these results, we installed a manhole level detection alarm to assist in preventing future sanitary sewer releases, and the lines are now under a $300,000 contract by a local utility contractor to be rehabbed to avoid any further sanitary sewer discharges and we are currently at 75% compleation on this project. Remediation efforts include opening fire hydrants to flush the affected area, and lime was spread as well to minimize the impact of the spill. It is our duty to comply with the requirements of Collection System Permit Number WQCS00006 and G.S. 143-215.1(a)(1), and we will continue to address unforeseen circumstances as quickly as they occur. If any additional information is required, please do contact me. We appreciate your review and welcome your feedback.
