This letter is in response to the Notice of Violation and Recommendation for Enforcement Letter
dated July 14, 2020 received by the City of Greensboro. The address where the violation
occurred and the amount spilled is shown below:
1. 1617 Stanley Rd. 4000 Gallons
The sanitary sewer release at 1617 Stanley Rd. was due to an accumulation of debris in the
sanitary sewer at this address. We dispatched a combination jet truck to remediate the blockage
and clean the line. Once we remediated sanitary sewer overflow, we thoroughly cleaned all
sanitary lines in the area. After an inspection, we found the sanitary lines partially blocked with
tuberculation, causing the line to backup and surcharge, ultimately causing the sanitary sewer
release. Due to the heavy corrosion, we had trouble unstopping and cleaning the sanitary lines,
and that is the reason for the long event duration. The lines are now under a $300,000 contract by
a local utility contractor to be rehabbed to avoid any further sanitary sewer discharges and we are
currently at 75% completion on this project.
Remediation efforts include opening fire hydrants to flush the affected area.
It is our duty to comply with the requirements of Collection System Permit Number WQCS00006
and G.S. 143-215. 1 (a)(1), and we will continue to address unforeseen circumstances as quickly
