On April 18 at 7:30 p.m. an SSO occurred at 3793 Hartford Street in Winston-Salem. Our first responders determined that the overflow was caused by an accumulation of grease. A high-pressure nozzle was used to cut through the blockage and normal flow was restored within five hours. The area was cleaned following standard protocol and a diffuser was deployed for three hours. Upstream and downstream mains were cleaned and inspected by CCTV with no visual defects observed. As is our standard proactive practice, Can the Grease and No Wipes in Pipes literature was distributed to customers near the spill site. Our Can the Grease outreach continues to educate the public on proper disposal of fats, oils and grease. cityofws.org/grease WSFC Utilities continues to make progress in minimizing SSOs and has the proper programs in place to maintain our high level of performance. Since the start of the Collection System Improvement Program in 2016, we have cleaned 58% of our system, which is more than 1,000 miles of pipe. We are well positioned to exceed our goal of cleaning the entire system by 2026. I hope this information is helpful with your investigation of Incident #202200627.
