It is our conviction that coal ash is toxic to the environment and to the health of human
beings. Recent events would indicate that Duke Energy and its surrogates have not
achieved sufficient expertise in the safe storage of coal ash . It would be our preference
that no coal ash be stored in Lee or Chatham counties.
However, if DENR in its wisdom, elects to approve the permits that are pending, we
urgently request that the communities involved be given the opportunity to establish
baseline data so that ground water, the water in ponds, creeks and streams, and the
water in the Deep River and the Cape Fear River can be effectively monitored for any
leeching of toxic materials that occurs into the future. This river basin provides the
drinking water for five counties and two military bases in North Carolina.
We share IDENR's goal of long term protection of our water sources. Baseline testing is
the recommendation of the Southern Environmental Law Center for sites where coal
ash will be stored.
We are requesting that no coal ash be transported into Lee and Chatham counties until
we have sufficient data to effectively monitor our water sources into the future.

It is our conviction that coal ash is toxic to the environment and to the health of human
beings. Recent events would indicate that Duke Energy and its surrogates have not
achieved sufficient expertise in the safe storage of coo! ash .
This river basin provides the
drinking water for five, counties and two military bases in North Carolina.
We share DENR's goal of long term protection of our water sources. Baseline testing is
the recommendation of the Southern Environmental Law Center for sites where coal
ash, will be stored.
We are requesting that no coal ash be transported into Lee and Chatham counties until
we have sufficient data to effectively monitor our water sources into the future.

It is our conviction that coal ash is toxic to the environment and to the health of human
beings. Recent events would indicate that Duke Energy and its surrogates have not
achieved sufficient expertise in the safe storage of coal ash . It would be our preference
that no coal ash be stored in Lee or Chatham counties.
However, if DENR in its wisdom, elects to approve, the permits that are pending, we
urgently request that the communities involved be given the opportunity to establish
baseline data so that ground water, the water in ponds, creeks and streams, and the

RE: IMPACT OF COAL ASH STORAGE ON WATER RESOURCES
We share DENR's,goal of long term, protection of our water sources. Baseline testing is
the recommendation of the Southern Environmental Law Center for sites where coal
ash willil be stored.

However, if DENR in its wisdom, elects to approve the permits that are pending, we
urgently request that the communities involved be given the opportunity to establish,
baseline data so that ground water, the water in ponds, creeks and streams, and the
water in the Deep, River and the Cape Fear River can be effectively monitored for any
leeching of toxic materials that occurs into the future. This river basin provides the
drinking water for five counties and two military bases in North Carolina.
We share DENR's goal of long term protection of our, water sources. Baseline testing is
the recommendation of the Southern Environmental Law Center for sites where coal

water in the Deep River ands the Cape Fear River can be effectively monitored for any
leeching of toxic materials that occurs into the future. This river basin provides the
drinking water for five counties and two miilitary bases in North Carolina.
We share DENIRs goal of long term protection of our water sources.
