SUBJECT: Bethel Park Stream Restoration Project
Dear Mr. Taylor:
Biologists with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission(NCWRC)received your
December 2,2022 letter regarding plans for a stream restoration project East Prong Hunting Creek
and Fiddlers Run in Burke County. You requested review and comment on the project. Our
comments on this project are offered for your consideration under provisions of the Clean Water Act
of 1977 (33 U.S.C. 466 et. seq.) and Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act(48 Stat. 401, as amended;
16 U.S.C. 661-667d).
The project will restore the subject streams, construct floodplain benches, and plant a native riparian
buffer on an unknown length of stream, as well as install bioswales and bioretention areas.
This project should not impact wild trout resources, and a trout moratorium will not be needed. We
recommend that riparian buffers that are to be reestablished be as wide as possible, given site
constraints and landowner needs. NCWRC generally recommends a woody buffer of 100 feet on
perennial streams to maximize the benefits of buffers, including bank stability, stream shading,
treatment of overland runoff, and wildlife habitat.
Thank you for the opportunity to review and comment on this project. Please contact me at(828)
400-4223 if you have any questions about these comments.
Sincerely,
Andrea Leslie
