INITIAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR THE DINKINS BOTTOM
5 -D DEEP CREEK MITIGATION PROJECT
YADKIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This is the initial progress report for the Dinkins Bottom 5 -D Mitigation
Project. This report covers from May 15, 2009 thru November 30, 2009
and includes the following:
Project History (time line)
Hydrologic Monitoring
Vegetation Monitoring
Photographs of site from established points of view
Summary
2.0 PROJECT HISTORY (time line)
12/15/03
Prep land and planted 6,600 Trees
02/10/09
Installed ditch plugs (3 each)
03/25/09
Replanted 240 hardwood trees in disturbed area r
after plug construction completed 1
04/08/09
Installed test wells ( #1 thru #6)
05/15/09
Started test well monitoring
08/03/09
Established 10 ea. Habitat evaluation plots
10/26/09
Installed deep test well cluster ( #7)
3.0 MONITORING
This section includes information concerning:
1. Hydrologic Monitoring — test well, water levels, rainfall data
2. Vegetative monitoring — planted hardwood trees, survivability
status, and volunteer tree and herbaceous vegetation, types and
populations primarily within the 10 habitat evaluation plots
3. Exhibit #1 shows location of the above items
3.1 HYDROLOGIC MONITORING
This section includes information concerning:
1. Test well water level data. (Exhibit #2)
The data presented in Exhibit #1 was initiated on May
15, 2009, once the test wells were installed and stabilized,
data was collected approx. ever 14 days and plotted on a graft.
Page 2
Monthly rainfall totals are shown below test well data. Rainfall
gage was installed in June, 2009 at test well #1 and is checked
after each rain event with monthly totals shown on the graft.
#7 test well data started on 10/21/09 and was designed to show
deep ground water levels (124 ").Test well #5R is the reference
well.
2. Exhibit #3 is the field data work sheets, which gives climatic
conditions at time of visit. Daily rainfall readings and conditions
at the South Deep Creek Bridge.
3.2 VEGETATIVE MONITORING
10 each .05 acre vegetative monitoring plots were established and
monitoring begun August /September of 2009, see Exhibit #4. Plots
closer to Dinkins Bottom road have a purer stand of planted
hardwoods. Plots further back toward the existing hardwood stand
are showing more intrusions of native species, i.e., Sweet Gum,
Box Elder, Red Maple, Sycamore etc. As of this report no Pines
are present in the mitigation area. Of the planted species Water
Tupelo had the lowest survival rate and Green Ash was the highest.
In the area of the confluence of the 3 drainage ditches (plugs) this
area has remained the wettest for the longest period of time, hydric
vegetation has become established, (Le) Juncus, Cyperaceae,
Sagettaria (arrow head), Cicuto Emaculate (water hemlock) and
Typla Latifolia (cattail) The predominate vegetation found through
out the project as of this report consist of Asters, Blackberry,
Goldenrod, Ragweed and Juncus.
3.3 PHOTOGRAPHS of site (Exhibit #5)
All photos have and will be taken from a point equal distance from
the site's gravel access road and the culvert that runs under
Dinkins Bottom Road at the confluence of the 3 drainage ditches.
(see exhibit 91)

4.0 SUMMARY
As stated in the introduction this initial report includes data from
May of 2009 through November 2009.
4.1 VEGITATIVE /HABITAT
The habitat goal of a minimum of 320 trees (hardwood species) per
acre, has been well maintained with a count of over 600 planted
trees per acre surviving to date, (these trees were planted in 2004)
This number does not include volunteer hardwood species. The
species type and count, both planted and volunteer is delineated in
exhibit #4. All planted hardwood species have been successfully
established with the exception of water tupelo of which only two
(2) trees were identified within the Habitat Evaluation Plots.
4.2 WETLAND HYDROLOGY
As shown in Exhibit #2 wetland hydrology goals were met from
the start of monitoring, May 15, 2009 through June 6, 2009, a
period of 23 consecutive days during the growing season (April 11
through October 30).
