Snider, Assistant Regional Supervisor Winston-Salem Water Quality Regional Operations 450 West Hanes Mill Road, Suite 300 Regional Office Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27105 Dear Mr. Snider, This letter is in response to the Notice of Violation and Recommendation for Enforcement Letter dated August 26, 2020 received by the City of Greensboro. The address where the violation occurred and the amount spilled is shown below: 1. 1619 Stanley Rd. 3500 Gallons 20 2 6 O t 3 5 Z6R c d 140`J 5,ujzD 9 s/qZoa The sanitary sewer release at 1619 Stanley Rd. was due to an accumulation of debris in the sanitary sewer at this address. We dispatched a combination jet truck to remediate the blockage and clean the line. Once we remediated the sanitary sewer overflow, we thoroughly cleaned all the sanitary pipes in the area. After an inspection, we found the sanitary lines partially blocked with tuberculation, causing the line to backup and surcharge, ultimately causing the sanitary sewer release. Due to the heavy corrosion, we had trouble unstopping and cleaning the sanitary pipes, and that is the reason for the long event duration. The lines are now undergoing extensive rehabilation, including replacing 680 feet of sewer main under I-40, two stream crossings and lining 430 feet of existing line. Based on our CCTV investigation, these repairs should alleviate all restrictions and corrosion in this section of the collection system. We are confident with this extensive rehabilitation that any repeat SSOs can be avoided. The rehabilitation work is scheduled to be completed by mid -September. Remediation efforts include opening fire hydrants to flush the affected area. It is our duty to comply with the requirements of Collection System Permit Number WQCS00006 and G.S. 143-215.1(a)(1), and we will continue to address unforeseen circumstances as quickly as they occur. If any additional information is required, please do contact me. We appreciate your review and welcome your feedback.
