The citizens of Lee and Chatham are depending on your department to see thru the coal ash dust that Duke is responsible for. The reasons why this toxic dump should not be forced on the citizens of Lee /Chatham county include: • Roberts creek that is at the Colon Rd site, flows into the Cape Fear River. • We need to practice conservation in NC, in areas like this is, filled with wildlife, large natural ponds, streams, migration paths, and habitats for many animals. • The consideration of the neighborhood and the quick loss of property values. Many of these residents are elderly or lower income that do not have the funds to relocate. They will not be able to sell their homes. • An Environmental Impact Assessment Study must be granted or ordered for Lee and Chatham counties. The effects of coal ash dumping will likely be significant for these counties • The environmental harms of this 5 story mountain include air quality and water. The water monitoring wells spaced hundreds of feet apart will have low probability of detecting ground water polluted by landfill leachate. All liners leak. Many residents still have private wells. • No air quality monitors are listed? • Images are available thru the Lee County GIS of years the site was mined. With Charahs current permit this is 5 story dump , higher than the current telephone poles and will not be reclaimed to the original natural topography • How can moving coal ash across the state to one of the smallest counties be safe? The number of communities that will be effected along the truck and train route is difficult to comprehend. • Please contact Dr Lemly @ Wake Forest he will give you a lesson on selenium and how small amounts can filter thru these liners. • Only 29% of all 5 cells were ever mined. • The location of the toxic dump is near the fault line. • If one inch of rain collapsed a 4 story wall built at Asheville airport with coal ash, by Charrahs plans, Lee countys rain fall is historic and so was the tornado April 2011. Lee county gets over 47 inches of rain yearly. • Saltstone encapsulation on dukes on property away from waterways would still be far more economic and would not expose NC communities in the moving of the ash. • At the coal ash commission on the benefits of coal ash, all the experts said" Don't move it" Please take your job serious. You will be effecting thousands of families in Lee & Chatham counties and along truck & railroad routes. "The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations." — Pone John Paul II Keely Wood 919- 708 -5221
