Thank you, Lily Kay.
Ms. Hans:
Thank you for reporting the exceedance. We will place this email in your file.
As Lily Kay indicated, your efforts should focus on identifying the source of the low pH. Since another outfall had a pH
that was in the benchmark range, it would at first glance seem unlikely to be normal rainwater pH.
You can certainly collect a rainwater sample at your next sampling event, but chasing the pH down to the source is the
correct action at his time. You may well be able to identify it.
Remember that pH is basically a field parameter and to be accurate it must be measured within 15 minutes of collecting
the sample. If you attempt to chase it down and cannot locate a source, perhaps we could do a technical assistance
visit to see if we have any other ideas.
Let me know if you have additional questions.

Hey Lily,
I'm working in Winston now and Jerry Eplin handles stormwater for the Mooresville region. Can you take the pH directly
from the roof drain? In other words, you need to chase the low pH back up to the roof. I do think taking a raw
rainwater sample is a good idea.
Jerry,
Do you have anything else you need them to do?
Thanks,
Lily

Good Afternoon,
This is in reference to a parameter benchmark exceedance for the Duff -Norton Facility who operates under the
Stormwater General Permit NCG030000 and COC NCG030004. Please allow the below to serve as the required
notification to the Division's Regional Office as outlined in Table 4 of the permit.
On Monday March 13, 2023 we received our Q1 (Jan 1,2023 — March 31, 2023) stormwater sampling results. These
samples were taken on February 17, 2023 and the results indicated that we had a pH benchmark exceedance at Outfall
003 and at Outfall 004..
The result at Outfall 003 was 5.2 compared to the benchmark range of 6.0-9.0. The result at Outfall 004 was 5.2.
As this is the second consecutive sampling event which had a pH benchmark exceedance at these two outfalls, we will
be implementing the required Tier Two Response as outlined in section E-6 of Permit No. NCG030000. (Tier I notification
sent to you/ division Dec 15, 2022).
We have already conducted the stormwater management inspection and there are no signs of contamination. Both
outfalls 003 and 004 come directly off our roof and do not interact with any other sources. The only industrial activity on
the roof is the paint booth stacks which show no signs of contamination or runoff. The roof was fully replaced in 2021
and is in good condition.
We have researched potential causes of low pH in stormwater, but since the source is exclusively the roof runoff we
believe this is naturally occurring in the rainfall. We plan to do a controlled rain collection to see what the pH is prior to
coming in contact with the roof in hopes of gaining some understanding of where the low level is coming from.
Do you or your team have any additional suggestions on potential causes?
If you have any questions or require additional information please let me know. We have also entered this data in the
eDMR system and indicated a non-compliance as required.
