Treatment plant description Section 9.
Two 900 gal septic tanks - concrete construction
One splitter box for flow diversion with bar screen
One 7,500 gal aeration basin with integral bar screen, space for two positive
displacement blowers with 3 HP motor, piping for coarse bubble aeration,
clarifier with RAS and skimmer piping, contact chamber
One 10,000 gal aeration basin with integral bar screen, space for two positive
displacement blowers with 3 HP motor, piping for coarse bubble aeration,
clarifier with RAS and skimmer piping, contact chamber
Portable sump pump for waste activated sludge
One 900 gal chlorine contact chamber - with tablet feeders for disinfection and
de -chlorination
One 900 gal aerobic digester - a septic tank of concrete construction
One 900 gal holding tank - a septic tank of concrete construction
One Flow measuring system comprised of a 22-1/2 degree v-notch weir and a
Stevens Total Flow Meter with totalizer and chart recorder
The septic tanks of concrete construction are piped in series. They are part of
the original construction and are now approximately 45 years old and were
originally set at the influent for oil/grease removal. The aeration basins and
clarifiers are of steel construction and are a typical package plant design. The
contact chambers listed were originally disinfection tanks with no means of de -
chlorination and were augmented at some time in the past with the newer 900
gal chamber for tablet feed chlorination/dechlorination.
The 900 gal aerobic digester has an air supply from one of the aeration
blowers. Wasted sludge is manually pumped to this unit if needed. This unit
has been used infrequently in the past.
Estimate of removal for the pollutants are:
BOD 90 to 95%
Nitrogen 40 to 60%
TSS 90 to 95%
The adjustment of pH for the aeration basins is through manual addition of
pelletized soda ash or lime. The disinfection tablets are sodium hypochlorite
and a sulfide for de -chlorination.
Waste sludge from the treatment plant and contents of the septic tanks has
been handled in the past through pumping and removal by Wesson Septic
Tank Service with disposal at the Cliffside Sanitary District in Rutherford
County.
Outfall 002 for this permit has stormwater treatment from the runoff area at
the diesel dispensers via an oil/water separator. The oil/water separator is
approximately 95 to 98% effective in removal of oil/grease and TSS.
Effluent quality comments:
Data provided in the tables are the maximum daily value and the monthly
average that was the highest value for the three years 2020, 2021 and 2022.
The highest BOD readings reported (17.75 monthly average and maximum
daily of 54.9 mg/1) was in January 2022 and it is believed to be the result of
excess sodium sulfite in the effluent caused by poor quality de -chlorination
tablets and not a result of poor biological treatment. The next highest daily
and monthly average for BOD were 11.95 mg/l for monthly and 27.5 mg/1 for
daily maximum occurring October 2020. The typical BOD concentration in the
effluent is much lower than these highest concentrations.
