The City of Asheboro Water/Sewer Maintenance Department received a call on June 25th, 2020 about a strong
sewer odor near the address of 747 Lake Dr. the Water/Sewer Maintenance Department's investigator responded
immediately. The Investigator began checking and searching the area for any issues that may have caused the smell. He
found the problem was that heavy rain caused a bank to wash out of a small creek. The dirt that had eroded away use
to cover the sewer main. The ground and sewer main shifted which caused the sewer main to break. He called a crew in
to make the repair immediately.
The crew made the repair to the sewer main using an 8" X 12" mechanical joint sleeve. We also drove anchors
behind the pipe.to help stabilize to ensure no problems in the future. We repaired the bank that had washed out and
installed rip rap on the face of the bank to protect from future erosion. We ran a fire hydrant for 16 hours to clean up
the creek. Going forward we are going to inspect this section more frequently to make sure the pipe isn't exposed and
the creek is not washing away.
The City of Asheboro requests that the NCDENR refrain from taking any enforcement action as a result of this
incident. The Water/Sewer Maintenance Department displayed a prompt response time. There was no environmental;
