Division of Water Resources have scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday on the environmental impacts of the proposed U.S. 74 bypass in Union County. The bypass would be a toll road, extending from near Interstate 485 at the Stallings -Matthews line eastward to between Wingate and Marshville — about 20 miles. Development and construction of the roadway has been delayed by a series of challenges by environmental groups. The N.C. Department of Transportation's plan for the roadway shows that it would permanently impact 6.6 acres of wetlands and more than 15,000 linear feet of streams. There also would be temporary impacts to 1.4 acres of wetlands and 1,034 linear feet of streams. The hearing is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Union Country Agricultural Center, 3230-D Presson Road, in Monroe.
