This letter is in response to the Notice of Violation and Recommendation for Enforcement Letter
dated June 17, 2021 received by the City of Greensboro. The address where the violation
occurred and the amount spilled is shown, below:
1. 4057 Battleground Avenue 10000 Gallons
The sanitary sewer release at 4507 Battleground Avenue on April 26, 2021, was due to debris
accumulation in the sanitary sewer at this address. A combination jet truck was dispatched to
unstop the blockage and'°clean the line. Once the sanitary sewer overflow was stopped, we
thoroughly cleaned all lines in the area to ensure we could perform a CCTV inspection of the
line to see if further, action will need to be taken to prevent future debris accumulation. Upon our
CCTV inspection, we found a heavy presence of "flushable wipes" that the residents are using.
To combat this current trend, we produced and distributed public notices via social media and
television on the effects that wipes have on the collections system to help prevent future
accumulation. The line is now on a biannual PM schedule, and we will monitor the line to see if
that cycle needs to be increased in the future. We were able to contain 8,000 gallons of the SSO
in the excavation trench and pumped that sewer back into the collections system.
Remediation efforts included bringing in new topsoil, seed/straw, and lime was spread -as well to
minimize the impact of the spill.
It is our duty to comply with the requirements of Collection System Permit Number WQCS00006
and G.S. 143-215.1(a)(1), and we will continue to address unforeseen circumstances as quickly
