Due to the location of this project along Fourth Creek and adjacent tributaries as well as wetlands, land application is not achievable. This modification requests to distribute Class A residuals generated from the diamond grinding operation without discharge of wastes into surface waters. Slurry generated from the above referenced operations would be placed in temporary earth storage basins for dewatering and future beneficial fill. Unless otherwise noted, the Applicant shall submit one original and two conies of the application and supporting documentation For more information, visit the Water Quality Permitting Section's Non -Discharge Permitting Unit website General — This application is for treatment, storage, transport, distribution, land application, and/or marketing of Class A (or Equivalent) residuals under 15A NCAC 02T .1100. Unless otherwise noted, the Applicant shall submit one original and two copies of the application and supporting documentation listed below. A. Distribution of Class A Residuals (FORM: DCAR 06-16): ® Submit the completed and appropriately executed Distribution of Class A Residuals (FORM: DCAR 06-16) form. Please do not make any unauthorized content changes to this form. If necessary for clarity or due to space restrictions, attachments to the application may be made, as long as the attachments are numbered to correspond to the section and item to which they refer. ® The project name should be consistent on the plans, specifications, etc. ® The Applicant's Certification on Page 3 of this form shall be signed in accordance with 15A NCAC 02T .0106(b). An alternate person may be designated as the signing official if a delegation letter is provided from a person who meets the criteria in 15A NCAC 02T .0106(b). ❑ If this project is for a modification of an existing permit, submit one copy of the existing permit. ❑ Please submit this application form at least 180 days prior to the expiration date on the existing permit, or 90 days prior to operation of proposed facility(ies) for application packages involving new or changes to treatment and storage units. Cover Letter (All Application Packages) ® List all items included in the application package, as well as a brief description of the requested permitting action. Program Information (All Application Packages) ❑ Provide a narrative explaining the following: ❑ How the materials will be handled and transported from where the residuals were produced to where it will be treated. ❑ How the residuals will be processed/treated (attach process flow diagram). ❑ How leachate collection will be handled. ❑ Where the residuals will be stored until processed. ❑ How the final product will be distributed (packaging, bulk, etc.) ❑ What nutrients or other constituents (i.e. nitrogen, phosphorous, aluminum, calcium, etc.) are used or recommended as the limiting parameter for determination of residuals loading rate to ensure that it does not overload the soil and cause contravention of surface water or groundwater standards, limit crop growth, or adversely impact soil quality. ❑ Attach a marketability statement detailing destinations and approximate amounts of the final product to be distributed. ❑ Provide either a label that shall be affixed to the bagged processed residual or an information sheet that shall be provided to the person who receives the processed residual. The label or information sheet shall contain, at a minimum, the following information: ❑ Name and address of the person who prepared the residual that is sold or given away. ❑ A statement that application of the residuals to the land shall be in accordance with the instructions on the label or information sheet. ❑ A statement that the residuals shall not be applied to any site that is flooded, frozen or snow-covered. ❑ A statement that adequate procedures shall be provided to prevent surface runoff from carrying any disposed or stored residuals into any surface waters. ❑ Information on all applicable setbacks in accordance with 15A NCAC 02T . 1108(b). ❑ A statement that the residuals shall be applied at agronomic or recommended rates for intended uses. E. Detailed Plans and Specifications (Application Involving New or Changes to Treatment or Storage Units) ® Submit detailed plans and specifications that have been signed, sealed, and dated by a NC Professional Engineer per 15A NCAC 02T .1104(a). Specifications for standard equipment may only be omitted for municipalities with approved standard specifications, but use of the standard specifications must be noted on each sheet of the plans. ® Plans must include the following minimum items: a general location map, a topographic map, plan and profile view of the residuals treatment and storage units as well as the proximity of the residuals treatment and storage units to other utilities and natural features within 500 feet of all treatment and storage facilities, and detail drawings of all items pertinent to the residuals treatment and storage units. Depict minimum separations required in 15A NCAC 02T . 1108(a) on the plans. ® Specifications must include, at a minimum, the following for all items pertinent to residuals treatment and storage units: description of materials to be used, methods of construction, quality of construction testing procedures to ensure the integrity of the final product in accordance with 15A NCAC 02T .I 104(a)(2)(B), including leakage and pressure testing as appropriate. ® Plans and specifications must not be labeled with preliminary phrases (e.g., FOR REVIEW ONLY, NOT FOR CONSTRUCTION, etc.) that indicate that they are anything other than final plans and specifications. However, the plans and specifications may be labeled with the phrase: FINAL DESIGN NOT RELEASED FOR CONSTRUCTION. F. Engineering Calculations (Application Involving New or Changes to Treatment or Storage Units) ® Submit all design calculations that have been signed, sealed, and dated by a NC Professional Engineer per 15A NCAC 02T .1104(a). G. Environmental Assessments (Maybe Required— See 15A NCAC 1C .0300) ❑ Submit a copy of the Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSI) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Also, include information on any mitigating factor(s) from the Environmental Assessment (EA) that impact the construction of the residuals treatment and storage facilities. Operation and Maintenance Plan (New and Renewal Application Packages) ❑ For Modification Application, if there are any changes to the existing plan, submit an updated O&M plan. ❑ Submit the O&M Plan in accordance with 15A NCAC 02T .1110 and include at a minimum: ❑ Operational functions; describe the operation of the program to show what operations are necessary for the program to function and by whom the functions are to be conducted. ❑ Maintenance schedules; may include equipments calibration, maintenance of signs, etc. ❑ Safety measures; may include safety training program, manuals, signs, etc. ❑ Spill response plan; including control, containment, remediation, emergency contact information, etc. ❑ Inspection plan including the following information; ❑ Names and titles of personnel responsible for conducting the inspections. ❑ Frequency and location of inspections, including those to be conducted by the ORC, and procedures to assure that the selected location(s) and inspection frequency are representative of the residuals management program. ❑ Detailed description of inspection procedures including record keeping and actions to be taken by the inspector in the event that noncompliance is observed. ❑ Sampling and monitoring plan including the following information; ❑ Names and titles of personnel responsible for conducting the sampling and monitoring. ❑ Detailed description of monitoring procedures including parameters to be monitored. ❑ Sampling frequency and procedures to assure that representative samples are being collected. Fluctuation in temperature, flow, and other operating conditions can affect the quality of the residuals gathered during a particular sampling event. The sampling plan shall account for any foreseen fluctuations in residuals quality and indicate the most limiting times for residuals to meet pathogen and vector attraction reduction requirements (e.g. facilities that land apply multiple times per year but have an annual sampling frequency, may need to sample during winter months when pathogen reduction is most likely to be negatively affected by cold temperatures. The second phase of this project is focused on constructing collector -distributor lanes on 1-40, widening 1-77 from Exit 49B to north of the 1-40 interchange, and building a partial turbine interchange at the two interstates. The NCDOT contract number is C204163 and the state TIP number is 1-3819B, U-6039. As part of this interstate reconstruction project, new concrete paved roadway and ramps will be constructed. Upon completion of this new concrete pavement, the travel lanes and ramps will receive a diamond ground final surface. Concrete shoulders and bridge decks will not receive grinding. The concrete paving designated for diamond grinding on this project equate to a surface area of approximately 243,560-SY which when ground, will generate approximately 1,217,800-Gal of Diamond Ground Slurry (DGS). This slurry is defined as a Class A residual and the distribution of this material is regulated. For this reason, NCDENR has issued the NCDOT a statewide Permit (No. WQ0035749) for the distribution of such Class A Residuals. Specifically, this permit allows for the slurry be land applied and provides guidelines for doing so. After a thorough review of this permit and the guidelines, it became apparent that this project presented challenges that reduced the applicability of the general permit. It was determined that while Land Application is an option that will be employed on this project, only a portion of the project's DGS would be able to be managed in this manner. As a result of the challenges identified, the project was forced to explore options beyond (in addition to) land applying the DGS. Together, NCDOT and Lane Construction evaluated different alternatives and finally settled on creating a DGS Management System for this project. The main premise of the proposed DGS System is to process the slurry by letting the ground concrete settle out of the solution leaving the water component to be further managed. The water will be extracted and the ground concrete will be contained. DGS Management System DGS is generated as a result the diamond grinding operation. During this operation water used to cool the blades of the grinding machine mixes with ground concrete to create a slurry. When land applying, the slurry captured by the grinder's vacuum is typically pumped directly onto the dirt shoulder adjacent to the roadway. However, for this project the slurry will be vacuumed up by the grinding machine and deposited into a waiting tanker truck. The slurry that is pumped into the tanker truck will be monitored for high pH levels. Muriatic Acid will be added to the tanker as required to keep it within allowable limits for transport (pH<12.5). The tanker will then take the slurry to a containment basin located within the NCDOT Right of Way of this project. The slurry will be deposited into the basin and it will be allowed to settle. As the DGS settles, the ground concrete will fall out and the water to rise. Water will be pumped from the containment basin into an evaporation basin. Should evaporation rates not keep up, water will be pumped from the evaporation basin to another tanker truck which will transport the water to areas where it can be land applied. The ground concrete component of the slurry will be collected in the containment basin and allowed to dry. Once dry, the material will be subjected to the paint filter test and upon passing will be mixed with earthen material from the project and buried in place. The entire area of the DGS Management system will be brought up to final grade and grassed per the plans and specifications of the project. This project poses multiple challenges that make general land application difficult and/or unallowable- (i.e. limited flat/open areas, jurisdictional streams, wetlands-1 With the understanding that this project would need to find a solution other than (in addrtron to) Land Application, Lane worked closely with NCDOT to explore alternatives. The selected alternative calls for a system to be setup to process and contain the Class A residuals resulting from the Diamond Grinding Operation. The overall goal is to manage the slurry onsite with a process that ensures Safety and Compliance. The proposed process for this project is as follows: 1.40/1.77 Statesville OG5 Management Process: he Diamond Grinder(s) that work on the roadway require water to keep their blades cool- This water combines with concrete grindings to form a slurry which is vacuumed up by the grinding machine and held in a tanker truck. This slurry will be monitored for pH and Muriatic Acid will be added to the tank as required to keep it within tolerable limits for transport. Once full, the tanker truck will take the slurry to a containment basin that will be located between-YRPCA- and 1.77 at approximate mile marker 52. (This location is completely within NC00T Bight of Way) once at the containment basin, the slurry will be deposited into the basin and allowed to settle- In so doing, the ground c oncrete will fallout and water will rise. The water will be actively managed by onsite personnel staffed by Lane. After being I rained, these workers will pump water from the containment basin into an adjacent evaporation basin. Pond fountains may be used to facilitate rapid evaporation - Due to the amount of water that will be introduced at grinding operation, it is anticipated that evaporation alone will not Suffice as the sole component of the water management plan, For this reason. Lane has evaluated addrttonal means of water ranagement- Water from the girding operation introduced to the containment basins will be allowed sufficient time for tiolyd particulates to settle out and then will be recycled and used again by the diamond grinder. Water will also be land applied as allowable under the general NCDENR permit W0003749. When acceptable, the water will also be utilized in other operations on the project such as to achieve optimum moisture content in fill material or for general dust surpression. Upon completion of the Diamond Grinding operation, all of the ground concrete that has settled out in the containment basin will be allowed to dry- Lane's water management efforts will continue to help this material dry as quickly as possible. As the material dries out, Lane forces will carefully mound up the material in the basins so that gravity assists in the dewatering. Water will slowly flow out of the grindings and will be pumped to an evaporation basin- This process wilt continue until the material passes the paint filter test. At that time, the ground concrete will be mixed with earthen material from the project and buried in place overtop of the abandoned liner. Once buried, the area will be brought to final grade and grassed. The location of this containment basin has been selected for this exact reason. This project posed challenges that made the general permit (WQ0037491 ineffective as a standalone means of managing the slurry, Taking these challenges Into account, IAne Construction and NCUOT developed a plan to manage the slurry that includes separation and containment of ground concrete and then elimination of water, f he final design presented above was calculated based upon the need to handle a maximum theoretical loading condition. To get to this theoretical maximum loading, a number of assumptions were made: + First: We assumed that the 259E of the entire project quantity of slurry would be introduced at one time. (Note Using typical Diamond Gnndmg Production rates, to amass this quantity of Slurry would take 3 weeks of uninterrupted production.I + Second; It was assumed that during this moment of maximum loading, zero water is managed. This means that no amount of water reduction has or is occurring. (Zero evaporation. No Reuse on site, No land Application, Etc.) • Thlyd: We assumed that this 2S% loading is the final quarter of the project's quantity. This means that 75%of the project quantity had already been processed through this slurry management system. With that assumption, the capacity of the containment basin was reduced by the amount of ground concrete that would have previously settled out into it, • Fourth: We assumed that the 25 year design storm has occurred during this moment of matiimum loading. X � . t�j • Y plans and specifications • flrV A — 1� � a1 �•r�I\ `� 10 The Lane Construction Corporation NCDOT Contract # C204163 Operations Management DGS Management Plan Containment Basin To ensure successful operation of this DGS Management plan, there are three hold points where testing and inspections need to occur: • Tanker Truck pH Monitoring and Control • Containment Pond Monitoring and pH Control • Reclamation Tanker Truck pH Monitoring and Control During grinding, the residuals will be pumped from the grinding machine into a tanker truck. The pH of the slurry must be below 12.5 in order to drive the tanker truck on public roads, so the water used in the grinding operation will be pre-treated with muriatic acid. Prior to leaving the grinding operation, Lane will check a sample of the slurry to ensure the pH is at an acceptable level. In the event it is not, muriatic acid will be added to lower the pH level. The form to be used for monitoring pH is included in Appendix 5. pH sampling will be performed by Lane personnel, under the direction of Allison Summers. All employees will be trained in the sampling method, EPA test method 9040C, and in the use of the pH meter prior to beginning sampling. pH measuring devices will be calibrated each day using buffer solutions 7.0 and 14.0, or according to manufacturer's recommendations. Containment Pond Monitoring and pH Control The containment basin as well as the evaporation basin(s) will be visually inspected daily during grinding operations, or weekly when no there is no grinding occurring. Maintenance will be performed as needed to keep the system functioning properly. The inspection form found in Appendix 5 will be completed during each inspection. If maintenance is required, Lane will perform within 24 hours for general housekeeping, or immediately for critical issues. Lane will monitor and record the pH of the Evaporation Pond(s) daily when transport operations are occurring (Land Application, or other uses). These pH observations will be recorded in the form found in Appendix 5. In the event the pH of the clean water is above 12.5, muriatic acid will be added until the level is dropped. This will ensure that any water that leaves the DGS Management System is at an acceptable level before traveling on public roads. Erosion and sediment control BMPs will be installed and maintained as needed to prevent sediment runoff from the disposal site. Reclamation The DGS Management System is located within NCDOT right-of-way. Once grinding operations are complete, the slurry remaining in the pond will be allowed to separate completely and any remaining water will be moved to an evaporation basin. The paint filter test will be used to confirm the cake has no remaining free liquids before making the determination to close out the system. Additionally, the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure test (TCLP) will be performed prior to close out of the system. 11 The Lane Construction Corporation DGS Management Plan NCDOT Contract # C204163 Containment Basin (Note: This is a new concrete roadway and does not require the TCLP, it will be done for an added level of safety). Once the material has passed the required testing, the grindings will be mixed with earthen material from the project. Each basin will be collapsed and everything will be buried in place. The area where this DGS system is located will be brought up to final grade with earthen material from the project and lastly the area will be grassed as required by the plans and specifications for the project. NCDOT General Operation and Maintenance Plan This DGS Management Plan — Land Application, has been prepared in accordance with the NCDOT General O&M Plan. The General O&M Plan provides an overview of the grinding process and outlines general practices to be followed during the operation. The practices outlined in this DGS Management Plan are specific to this project. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE PLAN N.C. Department of Transportation Permit No. WQ0035749 HYDRODEMOLITION OPERATION SLURRY DIAMOND GRINDING SLURRY Operational Functions Hydrodemolition Operation Slurry Description and Overview The hydrodemolition operation slurry (HOS) is generated by the hydrodemolition of concrete on bridge decks during the deck restoration process. The hydrodemolition operation will typically generate a range of volumes per bridge with percent solids of the unfiltered water ranging from 0.5 to 10 percent. The hydrodemolition operation will typically generate a range of approximately 10,000 to 50,000 gallons of HOS per bridge. The hydrodemolition process shall be managed, monitored, collected, and properly disposed of as a portion of the bridge deck restoration process. Many variables will determine the quantity, such as hydrodemolition contractor process, size of bridge deck, total depth of concrete to be removed, etc. The generated water and solids (slurry) is stable and contains a high calcium value for application as a lime amendment. Diamond Grinding Slurry Description and Overview The diamond grinding slurry (DGS) is generated by diamond grinding of concrete pavement which generates a slurry material consisting of water and pulverized concrete. This material is collected in trucks through a vacuum system concurrent with the grinding process. The generated slurry is stable 12 The Lane Construction Corporation DGS Management Plan NCDOT Contract # C204163 Containment Basin and also contains a high calcium value for application as a lime amendment. The diamond grinding process shall be managed, monitored, collected, and properly disposed of. The diamond grinding of concrete will generate a wide range of slurry volume per project. Many variables will determine the quantity, such as contractor performing the diamond grinding, length of roadway, etc. The HOS and DGS shall be collected, hauled, and discharged in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. The HOS and DGS will not be allowed to enter storm sewers, bridge drainage downspouts or bridge approach downspouts, ditches, surface waters, floodplains or wetlands. The HOS and DGS will be monitored to confirm its compliance with conditions in Non -Discharge Permit No. WQ0035749 to include: • Calcium Carbonate Equivalence (CCE) • Percent Total Solids • pH When land application of HOS is not a feasible option, the primary method of disposal will be to transport the HOS to a local publicly owned treatment works (POTW) or a licensed treatment or disposal facility. When land application of DGS is not a feasible option, other methods of disposal will be determined such as transport of the liquid portion to a local publicly owned treatment works (POTW) or a licensed treatment or disposal facility and disposal of the solid portion in an approved solid waste disposal facility. Maintenance Schedules Maintenance will be the responsibility of the Contractor performing the hydrodemolition or diamond grinding operations. In addition, subcontractors must have a current Land Application of Residuals "Operator in Responsible Charge" (ORC) as certified by the North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission (WPCSOCC). III. Safety Measures Safety plans and training will be the responsibility of the Contractor performing the hydrodemolition or diamond grinding operations. All subcontractors will be required to comply with safety plans and training as applicable to the Contractor's performing the hydrodemolition or diamond grinding operations. NCDOT recognizes that the safety of employees and contractors is paramount to the maintenance and construction of the state transportation system. Therefore, NCDOT recognizes no boundaries in the development and implementation of a world class safety and health program that will protect their employees, contractors and the traveling public. This plan details the procedure to follow in the event of a spill including how to contain, who to notify, how to report, etc. HYDRODEMOLITION OPERATION SLURRY DIAMOND GRINDING SLURRY SPILL CONTROL PLAN FOR PERMIT WQ0035749 THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS MUST BE TAKEN IN THE EVENT OF A SPILL: 1. Halt the source of the spill: Ruptured line or valve, or damaged tank unit. 2. Contain spill: Use straw bales to form a barrier. Straw or hay bales can be obtained from several sources for this purpose. Soil near the site can also be used to form a barrier for containment. 3. Clean up: Use land application equipment to recover as much of the Hydrodemolition Operation Slurry (HOS) or Diamond Grinding Slurry (DGS) as possible. After the application equipment has recovered as much HOS as possible, it will be land applied as per the management plan. A temporary sump pit may be dug in the containment area to enhance recovery. 4. Management of clean up efforts: The responsible party for land application shall take immediate charge of the clean up activities. Additional labor will be requested as needed. 6. Reporting: Within 24 hours of a spill the responsible party for land application shall present a written report detailing the cause of the spill and all action taken in response to the spill. SPILL PREVENTION PLAN The spill prevention plan requires that all equipment used to transport HOS or DGS be subject to periodic safety inspections. Tires, brakes, lights, and turn signals will be inspected for proper working order. Each truck will be equipped with safety flares and appropriate signs to be used in the event of a breakdown. Any deficiencies observed during the safety inspections will result in the vehicle being removed from service and the responsible party for land application will be notified so that these deficiencies can be corrected and documented. Routes leading from the storage point to the land application sites will be inspected for road hazards. The road hazards will be documented and the drivers will be informed of the hazards. Alternate routes will be investigated and routes which minimize road hazards will be selected. Hazardous situations resulting from rush-hour traffic will be avoided during hauling. Drivers and management personnel associated with the hauling of HOS or DGS will be instructed in the spill prevention plan and will be required to attend training sessions. Drivers will be trained in defensive driving techniques in order to minimize road hazards. A driver who observes a road hazard will be required to report the hazard to the field superintendent who, in turn, will warn other drivers. As part of the spill prevention plan, drivers will be required to inspect the safety equipment of their vehicles on a daily basis. Any deficiency in safety equipment will be noted for corrective action. Drivers will be trained in the procedures to be taken in the event of a spill that occurs during the hauling of HOS or DGS. These procedures are discussed in the spill control, containment, and cleanup plan. SPILL CONTROL, CONTAINMENT, AND CLEANUP PLAN Spills that occur during loading or unloading HOS or DGS will occur at the generation point and the land application sites, respectively. These spills will not involve an environmental hazard or an over the road hazard and, therefore, will be handled using the equipment that will be available at either site. Spills that occur over -the -road will be subject to the contingencies contained in the spill control, containment, and cleanup plan. Vacuum pump, pump truck or tanker truck. A vacuum truck, vacuum pump or tanker truck will be used to assist with clean up of HOS or DGS spills. 2. Outside equipment if required The following personnel will be involved in the spill control, containment, and cleanup. 1. The responsible party for land application will respond to the spill site and make an assessment of the spill and determine the containment procedures to be initiated and the equipment to be used to clean up the spill. 2. The responsible party for land application will be responsible for the direction of the cleanup team. In the event of a spill, the driver of the truck or application vehicle, if he has not sustained a debilitating injury, will call the responsible party for land application and report the spill. The responsible party for land application will notify the appropriate authorities and will also notify the appropriate DWQ Regional Office. The driver will set up safety flares and signs to warn motorists of the hazard. The responsible party for land application will mobilize the necessary equipment and personnel to the site, and will initiate the containment procedures. When the cleanup team arrives at the site, the site will be cleaned up according to the contingency plan. HOS or DGS cleaned up from the site will be transported to the land application sites where it will be applied in accordance with the permit. In the event that the driver is incapacitated due to personal injury, the responsible party for land application will mobilize the cleanup team as soon as the authorities notification of an incident. If the liner is pre -fabricated and made in multiple panels, each panel will normally be in one pallet. The liner material is wrapped in geotextile fabric to protect it during transport. Inspect the material as much as possible and do not accept if major damage is evident. • Handle the material with care during deployment and avoid actions that can potentially damage it. • We recommend the use of a skid steer that is capable of handling the material weight and can help in unloading and moving the liner to avoid damage. Do not throw batteries into the fire. 3 PH100/PH110-en-GB_v3.1 3/15 Overview pH Overview pH is a unit of measure (ranging from 0 to 14pH) indicating the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. pH tests are the most commonly performed measurements in water analysis and reports the negative log of the hydrogen ion activity of a solution which is an indicator of acidity or alkalinity. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are considered acidic, solutions with a pH higher than 7 are known as bases, and solutions with a pH of exactly 7 are neutral. The pH scale is logarithmic so, for example, if sample A is 1 pH less than Sample B, this means that Sample A is 10 times more acidic then Sample B. A difference of 1 pH represents a ten -fold difference in acidity. Getting Started • For new meters, remove the battery cap and then remove the battery insulating strip. • Remove the cap from the bottom of the ExStikTM to expose the electrode glass surface and reference junction • Before first use or after extended storage, soak the electrode (with its cap removed) in a pH 4 solution for about 10 minutes • White KCL crystals may be present in the cap. These crystals will dissolve in the soak or they can be simply rinsed with tap water • Always calibrate close to the expected measurement value • A sponge is located in the electrode protective cap. Keep this sponge soaked with a pH 4 solution to preserve Electrode life during storage Replacing Electrodes The ExStikTM is shipped with an electrode attached. Electrode life is limited and is dependent on (among other factors) frequency of use and care. If the electrode needs to be replaced, follow these steps for removing and connecting electrodes. Note that the PH110 has a refillable electrode. 1. To remove an electrode, unscrew and completely remove the electrode retaining collar. 2. Gently rock the electrode from side to side, pulling it away from the meter, until it disconnects. 3. To attach an electrode, carefully plug the electrode into the meter socket (note that the electrode connector is keyed, ensuring proper connection). 4. Secure the electrode in place by tightly turning the collar in place. (a rubber gasket seals the electrode with the meter). Automatic Electrode Recognition When the ExStikTM is turned on, it recognizes the type of electrode that is connected and displays the appropriate unit of measure. Attach electrode before turning the ExStikTM on. Powering the ExStikTM If the batteries are weak, the `BAT' indicator appears on the LCD. Press the ON/OFF key to turn the ExStikTM on or off. The auto power off feature shuts the ExStikTM off automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity to preserve battery life. 4 PH100/PH110-en-GB_v3.1 3/15 Operation Overview When the electrode is placed in a solution, the main display and bargraph indicate the pH reading while the lower display reads temperature (readings flash until they have stabilized). The bargraph is `center zero', i.e. at pH 7 there is no display. As the pH rises, the bar moves from the center to the right. If the pH drops, the bar moves from the center to the left. pH Calibration (1, 2, or 3 points) A two point calibration with a buffer of 7 plus 4 or 10 (whichever is nearest to the expected sample value) is always recommended. A one point calibration (choose the value closest to the expected sample value) is also valid. For best accuracy, always calibrate at the sample temperature. 1. Place the electrode into a buffer solution (4, 7, or 10) and momentarily press the CAL key. pH 7 should be calibrated first, then 4 and/or 10 pH. 2. The ExStikTM automatically recognizes the solution and calibrates itself to that value. Note: If the solution is more than 1 pH off from the 4, 7, or 10pH standard, the ExStikTM will assume an error and abort the calibration. CAL and END will be displayed. 3. During calibration, the pH reading flashes on the main display. 4. When calibration is complete, the ExStikTM automatically displays `END' and returns to normal operation mode. 5. The appropriate circled indicator (4) T , or V will appear on the LCD when a calibration has been completed. The calibration data is stored until a new calibration is performed. 6. For a two or three point calibration, repeat steps 1-4. Note: Always turn the meter off and then on before calibrating to allow sufficient time to complete the calibrations during one power cycle. If the meter auto powers off during calibration the calibrations remain valid, but new calibrations will turn the circled indicators off. Note: The Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) circuit is not active during calibration. To ensure a more accurate calibration, make sure that the calibration buffers are at 250C (770F). RESET If the meter will not calibrate or displays a -1, reset the meter and attempt to re -calibrate. Turn off the meter. 2. Remove the battery cartridge from the top of the meter. 3. Press the On/Off button for 10 seconds to bleed off all charges within the meter. 4. Re-insert the batteries and power on the meter. 5. Attempt to re -calibrate the meter. Changing the Displayed Temperature Units Press and hold the CAL button for approx. 3 seconds. The °C or OF icon will change first and the numerical temperature value will change after the button is released. If the Calibration mode is accidentally accessed `CAL' appears on the LCD. Simply turn the ExStikTM off and start again. Data Hold Momentarily press the MODE button to freeze the current reading. The HOLD display icon will appear along with the held reading. Momentarily press the CAL button and then press the MODE button immediately after CAL is displayed; the storage location number (1 through 15) will flash. If the CAL mode is accidentally accessed (display flashing), press the CAL button again to exit. 2. The last reading stored will be displayed first. To advance through the stored readings, momentarily press the MODE button. The location number is displayed first, followed by the reading stored in that location. 3. To exit the recall mode, momentarily press the CAL button and the ExStikTM will return to normal operation. CAL Reminder Display When the ExStikTM is turned on in the pH mode for the 15th time without recalibration, the `CAL' icon appears on the LCD indicating that the ExStikTM may require calibration. Some applications may require recalibration of the electrode more frequently than others. The CAL display is simply a reminder and will turn off when the pH electrode is recalibrated. RENEW Display A flashing `RENEW' warning indicates that the probe may be nearing the end of its useful life. If cleaning or recalibration does not cause the RENEW icon to disappear, replace the electrode. The RENEW display appears when the output of the pH electrode fails a diagnostic test. Considerations If the unit appears to be locked (display frozen) it is possible that the Data Hold mode has been inadvertently accessed by pressing the MODE button. Simply press the MODE button again or turn the meter off and restart if the display appears frozen. If the meter does latch up and no button presses revive it, remove the batteries, push the ON button for 10 seconds and then reinsert the batteries. Note that if the batteries are removed, any stored readings will be discarded. Also, the user calibration data for pH will be cleared. New user pH calibration data is required. Always install new batteries of the same type. pH Electrode Refilling (pH11O/115 refillable electrode only) The refillable electrode does not need to be detached from the body of the ExStikTM in order to perform the refilling procedure. Refillable electrodes Refillable (PH115) have a removable reference junction (slotted) and the word pH Module REFILLABLE on the side of the electrode housing. Removing the Reference Junction The removal tool supplied with the PH113 Refill Kit is used to remove the reference junction from the sensing surface of the electrode. If the reference junction does not have slots for the `teeth' of the removal tool to lock onto, the electrode is NOT refillable.
