Subject: General Wastewater Permit Inspection
Bonsal American
NPDES General Permit No. NCG500661
Guilford County
Dear Mr. Carter:
Donald R. van derVaart
Secretary
On October 14, 2015, Mike Mickey of this office met with you to perform a General
Wastewater Permit Inspection at the Bonsal American facility located on South Walnut Circle. This
permit is for the boiler blowdown and non -contact cooling water discharges and is separate from the
stormwater permit. The inspection findings are detailed below.
I. Permit
The General Permit expired on July 31, 2015. The Division is currently in the process of renewing
the permit. A new Certificate of Coverage will be mailed to you in the near future. The facility has
two separate discharge pipes. One for boiler blowdown and one for the non -contact cooling water.
II. Records/Reports
Part I (A) of the permit establishes a semi-annual monitoring frequency. The only sampling
conducted so far in 2015 was for pH on July 27, 2015. Please be aware that the permit requires you
to sample the cooling water discharge for flow (estimate), temperature and pH. The boiler
blowdown discharge should be sampled for flow (estimate), temperature, pH and COD. The
discharges should be sampled at the proper frequency and for the specified parameters.
There are no standardized discharge monitoring forms that have to be submitted. Records simply
must be maintained at the facility for a period of three years.
III. Facility Site Review
Both discharges occur at the back of the facility. The wastewater pools around the railroad tracks
and eventually reaches a tributary of South Buffalo Creek, class "WS-V; NSW" waters in the Cape
Fear River Basin.
