FISHERY MONITORING TO EVALUATE THE REROUTING OF ASH POND EFFLUENT
Dear Mr. Klimek:
Pursuant to Part I, Condition A.(12) of our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit
No. NC0001422 for Progress Energy's L.V. Sutton Electric Plant, Progress Energy is required to
conduct selenium fishery monitoring to evaluate the rerouting of ash pond effluent. Alan Klimek
provided us a letter to clarify this condition on June 18, 2004. This clarification stated the fish tissue
analysis and reporting requirements are required should a discharge occur from Outfall 004 (to the
Cape Fear River) during any 120 days within the calendar year.
Sutton Plant will not discharge from Outfall 004 (New Ash Pond) to the Cape Fear River for any 120
calendar days or greater in 2006. Therefore, the post - operational samples were not collected.
Progress Energy plans to collect the post - operational samples in 2007 if the 120 days within the
calendar year condition is met.
