FISHERY MONITORING TO EVALUATE THE REROUTING OF ASH POND EFFLUENT
Dear Mr. Klimek:
Pursuant to Part I, Section A.(12) of our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit No.
NC0001422 for Progress Energy's L.V. Sutton Electric Plant, Progress Energy is required to conduct
selenium fishery monitoring to evaluate the rerouting of ash pond effluent. Per the 1999 Selenium
Study Plan previously approved by DWQ, the ash pond discharge to the Cape Fear River must be in
operation for four months or greater before post - operational samples can be collected. Sutton Plant
did not have a discharge for four months or greater from the ash pond to the Cape Fear River in 2003;
therefore, the post - operational samples were not collected. Progress Energy plans to collect the post -
operational samples in 2004 to fulfill this annual requirement if the 1999 Selenium Study Plan
conditions are met.
