The archaeologica/Area ofPotenda[ Effects (APE) encompasses the 0.60 mile road length and SOft wide existing ROW. SUMMARY OF CULTiJRAL RESOURCES REVIEW Brief description of revlew activitles, results ojrevlew, and concluslons: A map review ahd site file search conducted at the Office of State Archaeology (OSA) on Thursday, August 1, 2013 determined that no previously documented archaeological sites are located within the boundaries of the archaeological APE or directly adjacent to the project study area. An inspection of NaHonal Re$ister of Historic Places (NRHP), State Study Listed (SL), Locally Designated (LD), Determined Eligible (DE), and Surveyed Site (55) properties employing resources available on the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (NCSHPO) website concluded that no significant historic properties with potential archaeological deposits are situated in the APE. In addition, historic maps of Wilkes County and the project area were examined for evidence of Eormer structure locations, land use pattems, or other evldence of occupation within or proximal to the APE. In general, the cultural resources review confirmed that no existing NRI-II' listed properHes or significant archaeological sites will be impacted by the proposed project. Further, the APE was referenced on topographic, geologic and NRCS soil survey maps (FcB2, FcC2, FaD, DpC2, CoA, RdE, FaD) to appraise environmental, geomorphological, hydrological, and other mrrelatives that may have resulted in past occupation at this location. Aerial photographs (NCDOT Spatial Data Viewer) were also examined and the Google Street View map application (when amenable) was utilized for assessing disturbances, both natural and human induced, which compromise the integrity of potential archaeological sites/deposits. Brief Explanation of why the available informatlon provldes a reliable basls for reasonably predictinq that there ore no unidentified hlstoric properties in the APE: The project APE contains no NRHP listed historic properties nor previously identified archaeological sites or cemeteries. According to soil data, the disturbed right-of-way is largely underlain by moderate(y eroded soil rypes or characterized by sloping ground surfaces unlikely to harbor traces of past cultural activity. Based on all of the above information, archaeological site potenHal is considered very poor.
