The existing bridge is 1 @ 18' timber deck on timber beams with vertical timber abutments. The proposed box culvert consists of 2 @ 10' x 6' barrels. The bridge replacement and associated improvements have been designed to minimize increases to impervious area. No additional travel lanes are proposed and the minimum required roadway typical section has been utilized based on traffic and safety considerations. Drainage patterns will be maintained with the realignment of the existing roadside drainage ditches. The low flow culvert dimensions are consistent with the existing low flow channel dimensions. The culvert will be buried 1 foot below the bed and filled with native material. A low flow floodplain bench has been design for one of the two barrels to maintain existing channel dimensions through the culvert. Culvert length has been minimized with the use of 2:1 side slopes. Culvert alignment has been selected to avoid sharp bends at the inlet and outlet. Stream Slope Fish and /or Aquatic Life Passage Existing Average Stream Slope ( %): 0.78 % Existing Low Flow Channel Dimensions in the Stream: The existing low flow channel width is approximately 10 feet wide. Proposed Culvert Slope ( %): 0.781% Culvert Burial Proposed Culvert Burial Depth (ft): 1 Existing Streambed Material: Sand, Silt and Cobbles Proposed Low Flow Dimensions Through the Culvert: The proposed low flow width of the culvert is 10 feet. Proposed Sills /Baffles: Two feet tall and 1 ft wide sills will be placed at the inlet and outlet ends on a single barrel to accommodate stormwater conveyance during high flow events. Existing Low Flow Velocities in the Stream (ft/s): 6.8 Proposed Low Flow Velocities roug the Culvert (ft/s): 6'9 Alternating Low Flow Sills /Baffles: No low flow sill /baffles are proposed since the low flow culvert width matches the stream width and the culvert/channel slope is less than Culvert/Stream Alignment Stream Patterns Upstream and Downstream of the Culvert that Could Affect Fish Passage and Bank Stability: The culvert will be buried 1 foot to provide fish passage. Stream characteristics up and down stream of the culvert appear suitable for fish passage. Bed Forms Impacted by Culvert (riffles, pools, glides, etc.): Bed forms should not be impacted by the proposed culvert. Low Flow Floodplain Bench Required? (provide justification) Yes A floodplain bench has been incorporated into one of the two barrels in order to maintain normal channel flow during low flow and allow conveyance during high flow events. Sharp Bends at Inlet/Outlet? (describe culvert alignment with stream) No The culvert has been aligned in a manner to avoid sharp bends at the inlet and outlet. Stream Realignment Necessary? (provide justification) Yes Concerns with channel migration have been expressed by the property owner in the NE quadrant. A realignment of the channel at the proposed culvert will improve conditions. The culvert will be shifted southward +/- half the width of the ex. bridge. Bank Stabilization: Class T rip rap bank stabilization in proposed for +/- 40 ft upstream and +/- 50 ft downstream of the culvert inlet and outlet.
