Accordingtothelandowners,intheЊВЏЉ͸ƭandearlyЊВАЉ͸ƭahogyardwaslocatedattheupstreamend ofT4andT5,wherethestreamsweredivertedtomakeahogwallowarea.Thehogsweremovedtoa hoghouseintheearlyЊВАЉ͸ƭͲhowevergoats,horses,andcattlehadcontinuousaccesstothisportionof thesiteuntilHurricaneMatthewstruckinSeptember2016.Thefloodsfromthestormdestroyedmuch SassarixaSwampMitigationSite MonitoringYear2AnnualReportFinal13 ofthefencingaroundT4andT5andlivestockhavebeenrotatedinotherfieldssincethattimewhile fencingwasbeingrepaired.Otherportionsofthesitehadnotseensignificantchangesinlandusewith livestockorcroprotationsfromexistingactivities.Table3belowandTable9in AppendixCpresent additionalinformationonprerestorationconditions. Therewereasignificantnumberofmaturehardwoodtreesthatwereleftuntouchedfromconstruction. AvisualsiteassessmentinSeptember2022indicatedthatsomematuretreesarestartingtodecline afterconstruction.PlantedtreesandvolunteerspeciesaregrowingthroughouttheSiteandstartingto fillinanunderstorythatwilleventuallybecomeamaturehardwoodforest. 2.2 VegetationAreasofConcernandManagement AsupplementalplantingoccurredintheSassarixaSwampIIMitigationBankeasementalongUT6in February2022.Afterplantingwascomplete,Wildlandsrealizedtheplantingoverextendedintothe SassarixaSwampMitigationSiteeasementby0.22acres.Thesupplementallyplantedspecieswerethe samefromtheapprovedMitigationPlan. A0.55acresofreplantingwilloccurinthewinterof2022/2023tosupplementthetreemortalitythat wasassessedalongT1(Figure1a).Thisareaandanynewspeciesnotincludedintheapproved MitigationPlan(Wildlands,2019)iscurrentlyunderreviewbytheIRT. AfollowupinvasivetreatmentoccurredinMarch2022alongthe11.99acres(Figure1a)alongthelower halfofSassasrixaCreektotreattheChineseprivet(Ligustrumsinense)thatresproutedfromthe originallytreatmentduringconstruction.Acombinationofmethodsincludedfoliarandcutstump applications.TheSitewillcontinuetobemonitoredforinvasivespeciesandfollowuptreatmentswill occurifnecessary. Kudzu(Puerariamontana)hasbeenestablishedoutsideoftheSitealongthefarmpathleadingupto T5a(Figure1c).AsapreventativemeasuretoensureKudzudoesnotbecomeestablishedonSite, WildlandsreceivedpermissionfromthelandownertotreattheKudzualongthefarmpathinJuly2022. Followuptreatmentswillbescheduledintheupcomingyears. 2.3 StreamAssessment MorphologicalsurveysforMY2wereconductedinMarch2022.AllstreamswithintheSitearestable andfunctioningasdesigned.All10crosssectionsattheSiteshowlittletonochangeinthebankfullarea andwidthtodepthratio,andbankheightratiosarelessthan1.2.RefertoAppendixAfortheVisual SassarixaSwampMitigationSite MonitoringYear2AnnualReportFinal21 StreamMorphologyStabilityAssessmentTableandStreamPhotographs.RefertoAppendixCforStream GeomorphologyData. 2.4 StreamAreasofConcernandManagement SupplementallivestakeswereinstalledinMarch2022asneededonrestorationreachesthroughoutthe Sitetoprovideadditionalshadeandbankprotection. 2.5 HydrologyAssessment BytheendofMY7,fourbankfulleventsmusthaveoccurredinseparateyearswithintherestoration reaches.AtleastonebankfulleventwasrecordedonallstreamrestorationreachesexceptT2.The hydrologicsuccesscriterionforbankfulleventshasbeenpartiallymetinMY2. Inaddition,thepresenceofbaseflowmustbedocumentedonrestoredintermittentreaches(T1Reach 2,T2andT3Reach1)foraminimumof30consecutivedaysduringanormalprecipitationyear.In streamflowgaugesequippedwithpressuretransducerswereinstalledtomonitorcontinuityof baseflow.AllintermittentreachesinMY2exceededbaseflowsuccesscriteria.Themaximum consecutivedaysrangedfrom63daysto87days.RefertoAppendix5forhydrologicdata. 2.6 WetlandAssessment OnegroundwatergaugewasinstalledandmonitoredwithinanexistingwetlandzonealongT3ata locationrequestedbyNorthCarolinaDivisionofWaterResources.Thepurposeofthegaugeistoassess potentialeffectstowetlandhydrologyfromtheconstructionoftherestoredstreamchannelthrough thisarea.Theresultsofthismonitoringarenottiedtoanysuccesscriteria.Resultsfromthe groundwatergauge,duringMY2,showthattheexistingwetlandmaintainedfreegroundwaterwithin12 inchesofthegroundsurfacefor36.8%ofthedefinedgrowingseason(March1toNovember16). 2.7 MonitoringYear2Summary Overall,theSitehasmetthesuccesscriteriaforMY2.Nineoutofelevenvegplotsareontracktomeet theMY3interimsuccesscriteria.Asupplementalplantingisplannedforthewinterof2022/2023to accommodatefortreemortalityalongT1.TheSassarixaSwampIIeasementwasreplantedinFebruary 2022.Whilereplanting,theboundaryexpandedbeyondoriginallyoutlinedandextendedintotheDMS portionoftheeasement.Somematuretreesthatwereavoidedduringconstructionarestartingto decline,howeveranewunderstorylayeriscomingin.AfollowuptreatmentoftheChineseprivet resproutsalongSassarixaCreekandadditionallivestakeswereinstalledthroughoutrestorationreaches inMarch2022.Asapreventativemeasure,KudzuwastreatedoutsidetheeasementinJuly2022. BankfulleventsweredocumentedonallstreamrestorationreachesexceptT2,partiallyfulfillingthe finalbankfullhydrologicsuccessrequirement.Greaterthan30daysofconsecutiveflowwererecorded onmonitoredintermittentstreamreachesT1Reach2,T2,andT3Reach1fulfillingMY2success requirement.Overall,theSiteismeetingitsgoalsofpreventingexcessnutrientsandsedimentfrom enteringtheNeuseRivertributariesandisontracktomeetfinalsuccesscriteria.
