SUBJECT: Request to Revise NPDES Perot
Unimin Quartz Operations
NPDES Permit Number NC0000175
Mitchell County, North Carolina
Unimin Corporation, Indusmin, Inc. and The Feldspar Corporation
have each requested that their respective NPDES Permits be modified for
pH from the existing limit 6. 0 s.u. to 9.0 s.u: to the limit in the old
permit 6.0 s.u. to 10.0 s.u. This office is aware of their request and
have been collecting flow, pH and alkalinity data from each company and
stream monitoring data from the North Toe River at Ingalls and the
North Toe River. at Penland.
Also, we have been in contact with Randy Dodd of the Technical
Services Branch and they have a pH program model in which the river and
facility discharge data will be entered into the program. Each
facility will be modeled at the high and low pH limits to see if the
stream water quality standard for pH will be violated. Our recommend-
ations will be based on our review of the model results. This model
should be completed within two weeks.
