RE: Fast Track Application for Elizabeth Brady Pumping Station Impeller Change Out
Town of Hillsborough
Dear Mr. Robinson:
Enclosed you will find the following items for the subject application package.
• Check for $480
• Fast Track Sewer System Extension Application
• Flow Tracking/Acceptance for Sewer Extension Permit Applications
• Supportive Technical Memorandum
• Aerial and Topographic Maps
• Copy of Existing Permit
In 2011, the Town of Hillsborough ("town") received a permit for and certified the completion of the
Elizabeth Brady Pump Station. This station was relocated from its prior location and installation of 1988,
and with the relocation, the pumps and force main were designed for the impeller to be upgraded later
to provide additional capacity. The town now seeks to enact this impeller change out modification
which will increase the capacity of the pump station from 900 gpm to 1470 gpm. No other changes will
be made to the size of pipe or piping components, as the existing equipment will meet the requirements
of the increased impeller size. The impeller will go from 10.05" to 11.25" blade. The sealed technical
memorandum supporting this change is attached.
This application is, therefore, a modification to the existing permit. The only change will be to the
operating point with continued operation of currently permitted equipment and pipe.
Please contact me with any additional information required to process the application.
Sincerely,
11

Due to continued growth in the Town of Hillsborough (Town), the Elizabeth Brady Pump Station (EBPS)
has neared its design capacity and additional flow capacity is now needed. The Town has also performed
a growth modeling analysis of their existing sanitary sewer system and have determined that the EBPS
will require further increased capacity in the next 5-10 years.
The purpose of this Technical Memorandum is to evaluate the existing pump station components and
determine the optimum size impeller that can be installed to maximize the flow capacity of the station.
Existing Pump Station
Davis -Martin -Powell prepared the design of the current EBPS in 2011; this project replaced the original
Brady Road Pump Station which was constructed in 1988.
The existing pump station is a duplex submersible station with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and
utilizes the original 10-inch forcemain to convey flows to the Wastewater Treatment Facility. The design
parameters of the existing pumps are described in Table 1:

The future operating condition was intended to be accomplished via an impeller change only, which would
allow for an increased pumping capacity of approximately 1,200 GPM.
The current forcemain piping arrangement included provisions (stub -out) for a future 12-inch forcemain
to allow for additional increased capacity. Installation of a new 12-inch forcemain, and abandonment of
the existing 10-inch line, would realize a pumping capacity of approximately 1,500 GPM, based on the
10.9" impeller size.

It is understood that the Town desires to maximize the pumping capacity of the EBPS by Increasing the
impeller size.
A review of the current pump data and various impeller curves indicates that the 50HP pump driver will
be the limiting factor in sizing a larger impeller. Based on the driver size, the largest impeller that can be
installed will be limited to 11.25" diameter without overloading the motor. This change would realize a
new pumping capacity of approximately 1,400 GPM with continued use of the 10-inch forcemain.
