I. INTRODUCTION:
This laboratory was inspected to verify its compliance with the requirements of 15A NCAC 2H .0800 for
the analysis of environmental samples.
II. GENERAL COMMENTS:
The laboratory was clean and well organized. The facility has all the equipment necessary to perform the
analyses. The system for traceability of standard and reagent preparation is effective, thorough and easy
to follow. Laboratory personnel regularly attend outreach and educational programs in order to stay
current with changes in program requirements. Examples of this proactive approach are: matrix spiking
was implemented into the laboratory’s quality assurance system and the Total Suspended Residue
practical quantitation limit was updated to be consistent with the 2007 Methods Update Rule. These are
new certification policies, since the last inspection that the laboratory implemented prior to the audit.
This laboratory is not analyzing any samples for compliance purposes. Most of the data being generated
is for stream and lake modeling.
Please be reminded, the 2011 proficiency testing results must be submitted by your vendor and received
in the certification office no later than October 31, 2011.
The laboratory was given a packet containing North Carolina Laboratory Certification quality control
requirements and policies during the inspection.
III. FINDINGS, REQUIREMENTS, COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:
General Laboratory
Comment: The temperature sensing device on the pH meter had not been checked with a properly
calibrated NIST thermometer. The North Carolina Administrative Code, 15A NCAC 2H .0805 (a) (7) (O)
states: All thermometers must meet National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
specifications for accuracy or be checked, at a minimum annually, against a NIST traceable
thermometer and proper corrections made. Documentation for the temperature sensor check of the pH
meter was received on August 5, 2011. No further response is necessary for this finding.

IV. PAPER TRAIL INVESTIGATION:
No paper trail was performed.
V. CONCLUSIONS:
The finding noted during the inspection was adequately addressed prior to the completion of this
report. The inspector would like to thank the staff for its assistance during the inspection and data review
process. No response is required.
