Inspection Summary
On January 5, 2023, Joseph Hoy and Jerry Eplin visited the Greenheck facility located at 1001 Commerce Center Drive in
Shelby, NC. The purpose of the visit was to provide assistance in identifying potential sources of zinc in stormwater
samples. Shawn Cornett, Environmental Health and Safety Manager, and Alex Roberts, Senior Director, Manufacturing
Excellence, were met at the site. The facility manufactures HVAC equipment. The main raw material is galvanized metal.
All processing work (ex. punching) occurs inside the facility. No liquid storage tanks, silos, or bag houses exist at the
facility. External storage can include new and used pallets and dumpsters for wood and scrap metal — these are stored
exposed to stormwater. Some forklift traffic occurs outside the facility, to access pallet storage and dumpsters.
In general, the building exterior appeared clean and well maintained. No obvious signs of oil spillage or excessive tire traffic
were observed. Open top dumpsters containing scrap metal were observed. There was some metal spillage on the
concrete surface nearby the dumpsters. Also observed were miscellaneous metal and wooden parts stored outside. One
area on the southwest corner of the property contains piles of dirt, gravel, and signs of concrete washout activities.
Potential sources of zinc: Potential sources of zinc observed during the site tour included the following:
• apparent galvanized dock locks
• apparent galvanized rain gutters/downspouts
• two scrap metal dumpsters
• scrap metal spillage near the dumpsters
• miscellaneous metal storage outside the facility
• a galvanized chain link fence
• concrete washout activities
The flow direction for the rain gutters was not definitively known. The gutters discharge to a below -ground piping system.
We recommend that facility construction drawings be reviewed (if available) to determine flow paths and verify outfall areas
maps. This will also aid in deciding where to collect samples to screen for zinc. The scrap metal dumpsters currently are
located in the Outfall #3 drainage area, however, at least one scrap metal dumpster was previously located in the drainage
area for Outfall #2. The date at which the scrap metal dumpster was moved was not immediately known. The galvanized
chain link fence is located near Outfall #3.
As the facility prepares the Tier III Action Plan, we encourage you to consider collecting additional samples to narrow down
the source of the zinc. Potential sampling locations could include discharge from rain gutters, upgradient catch basin(s),
and discharge from dumpsters. Additionally, we would recommend that you consider cleaning up the gravel, dirt, concrete
washout area located on the southwestern corner of the site. The site is otherwise nicely landscaped except for this one
area. It is unknown whether this area could currently impact stormwater metals concentrations, however concrete washout
liquid may have the potential to do so. Reportedly, concrete washout can contain a number of metals and can also impact
suspended solids and pH. Future concrete washout activities, if any, should be handled in a manner that prevents any such
liquid from reaching stormwater.
