MethodologyforannualmonitoringispresentedintheMY0AnnualReport(Wildlands,2021). 2.1VegetativeAssessment TheMY2vegetativesurveywascompletedinAugust2022.Outof45vegetationplots,39mettheMY3 interimrequirementof320plantedstemsperacre.FourofthesixplotswhichdidnotmeettheMY3 criteriumarestillontracktomeetthefinalstemdensitycriterium.Fixedvegetationplotsexhibited stemdensitiesrangingfrom0to647plantedstemsperacre,withanaveragestemdensityof399 plantedstemsperacre.RandomVegetationplotsexhibitedstemdensitiesrangingfrom283to809 stemsperacre,withanaveragestemdensityof510stemsperacre.The39plotswhichmetthedensity criteriumshowhighdiversitywithanaveragespeciescountof6andmodeof7.Herbaceousvegetation isabundantacrosstheSiteandtheriparianhabitatisreducingnutrientrunofffromthecattlefields outsidetheeasementandstabilizingstreambanks.RefertoAppendixAforVegetationPlotPhotographs andtheVegetationConditionAssessmentTableandAppendixBforVegetationPlotData. 2.2VegetationAreasofConcern DuringMY1,areasalongtheouteredgeoftheconservationeasementonT5andT4weredominatedby coastalbermudagrass(Cynodondactylon).DuringMY2,additionalareaswithintheeasementwere impactedbycoastalbermudagrassspread.Approximately3.22acresweresprayedwithherbicidein May2022andimmediatelyseededwithamixtureofbigtoplovegrass(Eragrostishirsutus),little bluestem(Schizachyriumscoparium),Indiangrass(Sorghastrumnutans),redtoppanicgrass(Panicum rigidulum),blackeyedsusan(Rudbeckiahirta),plainscoreopsis(Coreosistinctoria),andpartridgepea (chamaecristafasciculata).Another0.15acreareaalongT4R1wasseededinJune2022withthesame mixasabove.SeedingmeasuresalongT4R1weresuccessfulinimprovingherbaceouscover. Coastalbermudagrassistheprimaryvegetationinthecattlepasturessurroundingtheeasements; however,Wildlandsanticipatesthattheplantedtreesandnativeherbaceousmixappliedtothetreated areaswithintheconservationeasementwilloutcompetecoastalbermudagrassgoingforward. Additionally,Wildlandswillmonitorandtreatcoastalbermudagrasspatchesasnecessaryinfuture monitoringyears. Areaspreviouslydominatedbycoastalbermudagrassexperiencedhigh,butlocalized,stemmortality duringMY1.Toaddressthis,asupplementalplantingwilloccurwithintheseareasduringthewinterof 2023.Treespeciesselectedwillbethoseapprovedinthemitigationplan(Wildlands,2019).Additional areaswherestemdensityislessthandesirablewillalsobeincludedinthesupplementalplantingto ensuretheSiteisontracktomeetthefinaldensitycriteriumof210stemsperacre.Theareasproposed forsupplementalplantingtotal9.49acres,whichislessthan20%oftheoriginal54plantedacres. Detailsincludingspeciescomposition,density,andlocationswillbeapprovedbytheIRTpriorto implementation.SeetheCurrentConditionPlanView(Figures1.11.4)fordetailsonproposed supplementalplantinglocations. 2.3StreamAssessment MorphologicalsurveysforMY2wereconductedinMay2022.AllstreamswithintheSitearestableand functioningasdesigned.All25crosssectionsattheSiteshowlittletonochangefromdesigninthe DanielsCreekMitigationSite MonitoringYear2AnnualReport21 bankfullareaandwidthtodepthratio.Bankheightratiosarelessthan1.2.Visualassessmentsindicate thatinstreamstructureshaveremainedstable.Instreamvegetationcausedveryminorsediment accumulationinafewofthecrosssectionsduringMY1.InstreamvegetationwastreatedfromApril 2022toJune2022andnofurthersedimentaccumulationoccurredduringMY2.Furthermore,nowthat instreamvegetationhasbeenreducedwithinchannels,anyremainingaccumulatedsedimentfrom MY1isexpectedtocontinuetomovethroughthesystem.Vegetationremainswellestablishedonthe streambanks,providingadequatecoverageandprotection.Pebblecountdataisnolongerrequiredper theSeptember29,2021,IRTTechnicalWorkGroupMeeting.TheIRTreservestherighttorequest pebblecountdataandparticledistributionsifdeemednecessaryduringthemonitoringperiod.Referto AppendixAfortheVisualStreamMorphologyStabilityAssessmentTableandStreamPhotographsand AppendixCforStreamGeomorphologyData. 2.4StreamAreasofConcern Mechanicalrepairsweremadeon98linearfeetofT1R4duringOctober2021toaddressthreeunstable logsillsandbankerosionthatresultedfromwaterpipingaroundandunderthelogs.Thesestructures haveremainedstablethroughoutMY2.SeeAppendixAforphotographsoftheareapriortoand immediatelyfollowingrepair,alongwithphotosofthecurrentcondition.Visualassessmentshave indicatedthatallotherstreamreachesandstructureswerestableandperformingasintendedduring MY2. Murdannia grewinseveralstreamchannelsduringMY1andreceivedtreatmentfromApril2022toJune 2022(Figure1.11.5).Livestakeswerealsoplantedalongstreambanksinareaswherenecessaryduring thewinterof2022toshadeinstreamvegetation.Additionally,Murdannia wastreatedwithin headwaterwetlandsduringthesummerof2022,followedbytheapplicationofmillet(Setariaitalica)to actasasummercovercropandacombinationofcerealrye(Secalecereale)andoats(Avenasativa)to serveasawintercovercrop.Thesewereaddedtoheadwaterwetlandsduringthesummerandfallof 2022toincreasebeneficialplantcompetitionwithinvasivespecies.Dueto aǒƩķğƓƓźğ͸ƭ abilityto reproduceviafragmentationandtransportdownstream,itisbelievedthatcontrollingpopulationsin headwaterwetlandswillreducequantitiesindownstreamwaters.Wildlandsrecognizesthatmultiple treatmentsaretypicallyneededforeffectiveinvasiveplantcontrol.TheSitewillcontinuetobe monitoredandinvasivespecieswillbetreatedasnecessary. 2.5HydrologyAssessment BankfulleventswererecordedonT1R4,T3R2,T7,andDanielsCreekR4.Bankfulleventswerenot recordedonT4R1andT8R1.T4R1,however,experiencedabankfulleventduringMY1.T8R1hasnot yetexperiencedabankfullevent,butitisaheadwater,Btypechannelandfloodplaininteractionisnot anintegralaspectofthisstreamtype. Thepresenceofbaseflowmustbedocumentedonintermittentreaches(T1R1,T2R1,T5R2,andT8R1) foraminimumof30consecutivedaysduringanormalprecipitationyear.Allflowgaugeswerewell abovetheperformancecriteriaduringMY2withflowrangingfrom89to299consecutivedays.Flow wasalsoobservedinthesechannelsduringvisualassessmentsthatwereconductedthroughoutthe year.RefertoAppendixDforhydrologicdata. th Itisworthnotingthattheannualprecipitationtotalisclosetothe30percentilevalueobtainedfrom theAgriculturalAppliedClimateInformationSystemDUNN4NW,NCWETStable(ACIS,2022). Additionally,accordingtotheNationalIntegratedDroughtInformationSystem,HarnettCounty experiencedaseveredroughtthroughoutmuchofDecember2021followedbymoderatedroughtand thenabnormallydryconditionsinJanuary2022(NOAA,2022).Abnormallydryconditionsreoccurredin nningofMarch,theendofJune,andthroughoutAugust(NOAA,2022).Overbankeventsmight thebegi DanielsCreekMitigationSite MonitoringYear2AnnualReport22 havebeenaffectedaslowprecipitationreducessoilmoistureinthefloodplain,whichpromotes infiltrationandreducesdischargeinthechannel.Theseprocessesmayhaveledtonotobservingan overbankeventonT4duringMY2. 2.6WetlandAssessment Eighteengroundwatergaugeswereinstalledtomonitorthehydrologyinwetlandreestablishmentand rehabilitationareas.AsstatedintheMitigationPlan,thegrowingseasondatesatthisSiteareMarch1 toNovember20,unlesssoiltemperatureorbudburstdataindicateotherwise.SoilTemperatureProbe #1wasunabletobelocatedafteraJuly27,2022sitevisitandthereforedatashowingsoiltemperature throughouttheremainderofthegrowingseasonisunavailable.However,theprobedidshowsoil temperaturesstayedabove41degreesfrommidFebruarythoughthelastdownloadinlateJuly. Wildlandswillbereplacingthesoiltemperatureprobeduringthewinterof2023.SoilTemperature Probe#2showsthatsoiltemperatureremainedabove41degreesfromearlyFebruarythroughthe entiregrowingseason.LeafemergenceofAmericanelder(Sambucuscanadensis)andfloweringof rd 2022,alongwithsoiltemperaturedata witchhazel(Hamamelisvirginiana)observedonFebruary23 stth (Appendix5),supporttheuseofMatch1 thoughNovember20growingseasondatesinMY2.Tomeet thesuccesscriterion,gaugesmustshowgroundwaterwithin12inchesofthesoilsurfacefor13%ofthe growingseason(i.e.,35consecutivedays). Twelveofthe18groundwatergaugesattainedthesuccesscriterionforMY2,whichisasignificant improvementfromthe5outof18thatmetduringMY1(Table12).Groundwaterhydrologyacrossthe Sitewasaffectedbyrelativelylowantecedentprecipitationduringthewinterof2022andarelatively dryearlyspring.AsstatedinSection2.5,HarnettCountyexperiencedaseveredroughtthroughout muchofDecember2021followedbymoderatedroughtandthenabnormallydryconditionsinJanuary 2022(NOAA,2022).AbnormallydryconditionsreoccurredinthebeginningofMarch,theendofJune, andthroughoutAugust(NOAA,2022).Additionally,30daycumulativetotalsindicatedbelownormal precipitationthroughFebruaryandportionsofMarch.Duetotheseconditionsandanincomplete datasetinMY1(i.e.,manygaugesinstalledaftergrowingseasoncommenced),additionalseasonsof watertableobservationswillberequiredtobetterunderstandhydrologyattheSiteandthoroughly evaluatethesuccessofwetlandrestorationareas. Groundwatergauge19wasinstalledinajurisdictionalwetland,asrequestedbytheArmyCorpsof Engineers,butisnottiedtoperformancecriteria.Thiswetlandisinfluencedbyhydrologyofan adjacent,uphill,seepwetland.WetlandrestorationareaswithintheSitearetypicallybottomland hardwoodforestorheadwaterforestwetlandsthatdonotexperiencethesamehydrologicinfluence fromadjacentseepwetlands.Therefore,Wildlandsbelievesthiswetlandareamaynotbe representativeoftherestoredwetlandareasonsite. 2.7MonitoringYear2Summary Outofthe45vegetationplots,39exceededtheMY3interimrequirementof320plantedstemsperacre andanadditionalfourareontracktomeetfinalsuccesscriterium.Overall,stemmortalityrateshave decreased,anddiversityhasremainedhighacrosstheSite.Asupplementalplantingwilltakeplacein 2023toreplacestemslostduetocoastalBermudagrasscompetitionandensuretherestoftheSiteison tracktomeetthefinalsuccesscriterion.Visualassessmentsandcrosssectionsshowstreamswithinthe Sitearestableandfunctioningasdesigned.Areaswithcoastalbermudagrasswerechemicallytreated 022andseededaftertreatment.Murdannia hasbeenobservedinseveralstreamchannels duringMay2 andwaschemicallytreatedduringMY2.Additionalmeasuresincludinglivestakeplantingandeffortsto control Murdannia inheadwaterwetlandshasalsobeenimplementedtofurtherreduce Murdannia presence.BankfulleventsweredocumentedonT1R4,T3R2,T7,andDanielsCreekR4andgreaterthan DanielsCreekMitigationSite MonitoringYear2AnnualReport23 30daysofconsecutiveflowwererecordedonallflowgauges.Thirteenoutofeighteengroundwater gaugesmetsuccesscriterion,whichisasubstantialimprovementfromMY1despitedrierthanusual conditionsin2022.
