Lee, Secretary DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT February 4, 1980 M E M O R A N D U M TO: Gary Tweed, Environmental Engineer Asheville Regional Office THRU: Forrest Westall , Head Technical Services Branch FROM: Mark Castleberry, Environmental Engineer Technical Services Branch SUBJECT: Copper and Zinc Limits for M-B Industries There are no North Carolina numerical water quality standards for copper and zinc at this time. They, however, are covered by Section .0208 of Title 15 Chapter 2. This section states "the concentration of toxic substances in the receiving water, when not specified elsewhere in this section, shall not exceed one-one hundredth (0.01) of the 96-hour LC50". The Biological Monitoring Group of Technical Services is planning to run bioassey tests to determine the 96-hour LC50 for copper and zinc. These tests will probably be run this spring. Presently, we are recommending that permits with copper or zinc limits-use the BPT value with the stipulation that the limits are subject to revision once the 96-hour LC50 concentrations are determined. If you have any further questions on this matter, please let us know. P.O.Sox 27687 Raleigh,North Carolina 27611 An Equel Opportunity AJrirmetive Action Employer
