This letter concerns the Town of Columbia Waste Water Treatment Plant and our August request to
have the facility permitted to less than 500,000 gallons per Day.
When the Columbia Wastewater Treatment Plant was expanded it was anticipated that there would be
significant growth within the Town and the larger capacity would be needed. Since then two of our
largest sewer system users have closed or downsized leaving us with a system that does not even come
close to reaching capacity. Whitecap Linen which accounted for 25%of our capacity has closed been
closed permanently for more than three years and shows no signs of reopening.
Tyrrell Prison Work Farm, a State facility, closed three years ago and has only recently reopened at
approximately 30%capacity.That loss in revenue is also significant.
We requested reclassification to less than 500,000 gallons per day in order to more accurately reflect
the actual usage and in anticipation of savings in cost of testing. As a struggling small system we should
be prudent in operations and expenditures.
Please accept this letter as another request to consider reclassifying the Town of Columbia Wastewater
Treatment System to less than 500,000 gallons per day.
Call me if you have questions or need further clarification of this request.
Yours sincerely,
Rhett B.White, Manager
