Director Mr. Charles Herron Brenntag Mid -South, Inc. 2 HCI Boulevard Greensboro, North Carolina 27409 NORTH CAROLINA Environmental Quality December 8, 2022 SUBJECT: Compliance Evaluation Inspection Brenntag Groundwater Remediation System NPDES Permit Number NC0078000 Guilford County Dear Mr. Herron: Mr. Jim Gonsiewski of the North Carolina Division of Water Resources (DWR), Winston-Salem Regional Office (WSRO), visited your facility on November 10, 2022 and met with you to perform a compliance evaluation inspection of your facility's groundwater remediation system. The inspection found Brenntag to be compliant with the NPDES permit. Details of that inspection are included on the attached EPA Water Compliance Inspection Report. The following items were noted during the inspection: The remediation system is designed to treat chlorinated and non -chlorinated solvents. Groundwater is pumped from two extraction wells (EW-1 and EW-2) to the treatment building (RAS Building) near the southeast corner of the site. The groundwater flows into a holding tank, into two (2) in - line strainers, and then into a two -stage air stripper for final treatment. Treated water is then discharged through a PVC pipe into a tributary of South Buffalo Creek. Currently fifty-two (52) groundwater monitoring wells are located on and off site. The saprolite wells are sampled in April while the bedrock wells are sampled in October. The effluent is sampled monthly for pH and quarterly for volatiles and whole effluent toxicity. The system is very well run. The system and the building in which it is located appear to be in good condition. The outfall for the 4-inch PVC effluent pipe that transports treated water from the remediation system is located near the southeast corner of the site. This outfall empties into an unnamed tributary to South Buffalo Creek. D_E oeportnent al Environmental a•rlr North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality I Division of Water Resources Winston-Salem Regional Office 1450 W.
