TRILLIUM WWTP SLUDGE GENERATION CALCULATIONS
1. Average daily sewerage flow:

3. Assume domestic waste strength:
40,000 gpd
7,400 gallons
200 mg/1 BOD5
200 mg/1 TSS
25 mg/1 Ammonia
4. Treatment levels: 20 mg/1 TSS
5mg/1BOD5
3 mg/1 Ammonia
5. Pounds dry solids per day:
BOD5 0.04 MGD X 8.34 X .35(200 - 20) = 21.0 lbs per day
• TSS 0.04 MGD X 8.34 X (200 - 5) = 65.1 lbs per day .
. Ammonia 0.04 MGD X 8.34 X .3(25 - 3) = 2.2 lbs per day
• Total = 88.3 lbs per day
6. Cubic feet per day:
88.3 lbs / 0.02 X 62.4 lbs/ft3 X 1.005 = 70.4 ft3/day of 2.0% solids
7. Quantity delivered to sludge chamber per month:
70.4 ft3 X 30 days = 2,112.0 ft3 of 2.0% solids per month
8. Thicken reduction in aerobic sludge holding:
2,112.0 ft3 X 0.5 = 1,056.0 ft3 per month (7,900 gallons)
9. Solids reduction in aerobic sludge holding:
88.3 lbs X 0.5 + (88.3 X 0.5 X 0.5) / 1.005 X 62.4 X 0.04 = 26.4 ft3 / day
26.4 113 / day X 30 days = 792.0 ft3 per month
10. Gallons of sludge per month and per year:
792.0 ft3 X 7.48 gal/ft3 = 5,924.3 gal per month of 4.0% solids
5,924.3 gal X 12 months = 71,091.1 gal/year of 4.0% solids
11. Newly created sludge holding chamber capacity:
7,400 gallons / 5,924.3 gallons per month = 1.25 months; therefore OK
12. Chamber volume per capita:
7,400 gallons X 100 gpd per population equivalent/ 40,000 gpd X 7.48 = 2.47 per
capita
Notes:
1. 0.35 applied to BOD5 as a ratio of solids produced per pound of BOD5 removed. (From
"Water - Resources Engineering") .
2. 0.30 applied to Ammonia as a ratio of solids produced per pound of Ammonia removed.
(About same as BOD5)
3. Specific gravity of sludge is assumed to be 1.005.
4. VSS/TSS ratio of sludge = 0.50.
5. Percent VSS reduction in sludge holding = 0.50.
6. Sludge stabilization - add sodiu!m.hydroxide for 2 hours, with a pH of 12 or greater with
aeration for mixing, retain sludge in holding chamber for 22 additional hours at 11.5 pH.

This is a SIMPLE EXPEDITED permit renewal (administrative
renewal with no changes, or only minor changes such as TRC, NH3,
name/ownership changes). Include conventional WTPs in this group.
YES_ This is a MORE COMPLEX EXPEDITED permit renewal (includes
