The existing 17' L X 26' W three span bridge with a timber deck on timber joists, is structurally deficient (sufficiency rating of 58) and will be replaced with a new, single span 85' L X 30'W, box beam bridge at the same location. An off-site detour will be utilized during construction. The project involves 1,064 square feet (0.02 acres) of wetland impacts (531 square feet associated with permanent fill/excavation and 533 square feet associated with clearing/grubbing), 37 linear feet of permanent stream impacts associated with bank stabilization under the new bridge span and 18 linear feet of temporary stream impacts associated with removal of the existing bridge abutment. There are no deck drains on the bridge; instead, stormwater runoff will be captured and discharged into an energy dissipator in a non-buffer area at non-erosive velocities or will utilize existing roadside ditches which discharge prior to entering the buffer at non-erosive velocities. Proposed Riparian Buffer impacts include 5,055 square feet in Zone 1 and 1,510 square feet in Zone 2 to accommodate the wider span bridge and the necessary fill slopes as well as a utility relocation on the east side of the bridge. Please note that of the proposed "allowable" riparian buffer impacts, there are 491 square feet of wetland impact within Zone I and 69 square feet of wetland impact within Zone 2. A review was conducted for the presence of threatened and endangered species; there are no listed species within Alamance County that have federal status. The Bald Eagle is protected in every county in North Carolina under the Bald and Gold Eagle Protection Act; however, no suitable feeding/water source is located within one mile of the project study area to support Bald Eagle habitat.
