1.0 INTRODUCTION
Arauco North America, Inc. operates a wood product plant at 985 Corinth Road in
Moncure, North Carolina. The plant has a waste water treatment facility and wastewater
irrigation system which operates under Permit No. WQ0003396. The system was
initially permitted and installed at the facility in 1987-1988. This permit was modified
and reissued by the North Carolina Division of Water Resources on July 23, 2019.
Permit modifications included removing Spray Field # 10 from use and reducing the
flowrate for the facility to 39,525 gallons per day. The Permit was issued to be effective
through July 31, 2025.
The locations of the permitted spay fields, review and compliance boundaries are shown
on Figure 1. Sherrill Environmental, Inc. (Sherrill) was contracted by Arauco to perform
an evaluation of groundwater conditions related to the permitted use of the spray fields.
The Permit requires groundwater sampling at the existing monitoring wells to be
conducted three times a year for a variety of parameters. The routine testing shows that
chloride and total dissolved solids (TDS) are sometimes present in concentrations that
exceed applicable NCAC 2L Groundwater Standards at the compliance boundary. The
Permit defines the compliance boundary as either 250 feet from the wastewater irrigation
area, or 50 feet within the property boundary, whichever is closest to the wastewater
irrigation area.
2.0 INVESTIGATION
On September 18, 2019, Sherrill supervised Larry Opper of Regional Probing Services
(Regional Probing) in a groundwater investigation related to the facilities' permitted
spray fields. A truck -mounted Geoprobe model 5410 was used to perform the direct -
push soil boring. Soil cores were obtained on approximately four foot runs. Generally,
the borings were performed to a depth of 20-feet or upon penetration refusal on dense
material (Table 1). The soil cores were cut open by Regional Probing and the lithology
was logged and described by Sherrill. Upon completion of the boring, a temporary
monitoring well was constructed using new 1-inch PCV screen and riser pipe. The
annular space of the boring was backfilled with well sand and the borehole was sealed
above the sand with bentonite pellets up to the ground surface. A peristaltic pump and
new dedicated polyethylene tubing were used for well development and to collect a
groundwater sample for laboratory analysis. Upon completion of the field investigation,
Regional Probing removed the temporary well pipe and backfilled the borings with
bentonite pellets.
3.0 GEOLOGY
The facility is located in the Triassic basins consisting of continental clastic deposits of
alluvial, fluvial and lacustrine facies. According to the Geologic Map of North Carolina
(1985), the site is located in the Pekin Formation of the Chatham Group. The Pekin
Formation is described as conglomerate, sandstone and mudstone. The massive reddish -
brown claystones are locally mined by the brick industry.
C:\Users\Jack\OneDrive\S E I\Arauco\GW Evaluation\Report\Spray Field Groundwater
Assessment.docx
IISHERRILL ENVIRONMENTAL, INC
Soil borings at spray fields SP5 through SP 10 generally encountered intervals of clayey
sand, sandy clay and sand, and then transitioned to reddish -brown weathered mudstone at
about 19 to 20 feet of depth. Soil borings at spray fields SP2 and SP3 encountered
similar clayey sand and transitioned to reddish -brown mudstone at a shallower depth of 6
and 11 feet, respectively. Three of the borings in the SP2 and SP3 spray fields were
initially dry. In response to pumping, groundwater was more freely produced at spray
fields SP4 through SP10 and slowly produced at spray fields SP2 and SP3. The
shallower depth to bedrock at spray fields SP2 and SP3 along with the present
topography suggests that the upper interval of soils were removed at some time in the
past and may have been used at the facility for construction purposes. In summary,
spray fields SP2 and SP3 appear to have less capacity for infiltration and dissipation as
compared to the thicker more permeable soils of the other spray fields.
4.0 WATER ANALYSIS
4.1 Specific Conductivity
Specific conductivity is reflective of the concentration of dissolved ions in a water
sample. Specific conductivity measurements were collected in the field as part of the
sampling procedure (Table 2). North Carolina DEQ does not list any regulatory limits
for specific conductivity. Specific conductivity measurements collected for this
assessment are shown on Figure 3.
4.2 Total Dissolved Solids
Laboratory analysis of total dissolved solids (TDS) were performed on all the water
samples and are shown on Table. 2. The NCAC 2L Groundwater Standard for TDS is
listed at 500 mg/L. TDS concentrations are shown on Figure 4. The figure shows TDS
concentrations are contained within the compliance boundary in the western fields of
SP8-SP10. TDS concentrations appear to be contained in the northern fields SP5-SP7
with the exception of the northern tip where the compliance boundary is influenced by a
property boundary. TDS concentrations in the groundwater of the southeastern fields
SP2-SP4 show an eastern migration with some exceedances at the eastern compliance
boundary. These TDS exceedances appear to be well contained within the property
boundary.
4.3 Chloride
Chloride (Cl-) is completely soluble and very mobile. Elevated concentrations of chloride
can be toxic to aquatic life and may have impacts to vegetation and wildlife. There is no
natural process by which chlorides are broken down, metabolized, taken up, or removed
from the environment. The chloride remains in solution and is not subject to any
significant natural removal methods; only dilution reduces its concentration.

IISHERRILL ENVIRONMENTAL, INC
Laboratory analysis of chloride was performed on all the water samples and the results
are shown on Table. 2. The NCAC 2L Groundwater Standard for chloride is listed at 250
mg/L. The location of the samples and their chloride concentrations are shown on Figure
5. No chloride concentrations that exceeded 250 mg/L were detected in the western
spray fields SP8-SP 10. Chloride concentrations appear to be contained in the northern
fields SP5-SP7 with the exception of the northern tip where the compliance boundary is
influenced by a property boundary. Chloride concentrations in the groundwater of the
southeastern fields SP2-SP4 show an eastern migration with some exceedances at the
eastern compliance boundary. These chloride exceedances appear to be well contained
within the property boundary.
5.0 DISCUSSION
This assessment looked at four units of water: the effluent being applied to the spray
fields, groundwater samples taken from inside the spray fields, groundwater samples
from outside the spray fields at established monitoring wells, and surface water bodies.

In general, the analysis of the effluent is similar to the analyses of the groundwater
samples collected from inside and outside of the spray fields. TDS concentration found

in the groundwater do not exceed the TDS concentrations of the effluent. The highest
concentration of chloride detected in the effluent was 170 mg/L and the highest
concentration of chloride in groundwater samples was up to 790 mg/L. The data suggests
that chloride is somehow accumulating. The proportion of chloride to TDS in the
effluent is approximately 10%. The proportion of chloride to TDS in the groundwater
samples affected by the spray field is approximately 40 %. A possible explanation for the
increasing ratio is that some of the components of the dissolved solids are nutrients that
can be removed by plant activity and other natural processes. As components of the TDS
attenuate, chloride concentrations remain unaffected and therefore increase in a relative
concentration.
In general, the spray fields appear to be functioning as designed. The effluent sprayed on
the fields is largely attenuated prior to crossing a compliance boundary. An exceedance
of a groundwater standard at a property boundary is not likely. To our knowledge, no
exceedance of a surface water standard at Shaddox Creek (SCMS) has been detected.
The groundwater concentrations of TDS and chloride detected at the network of existing
monitoring wells have not varied much over time indicating that the constituents are
attenuating and not accumulating. The table below shows chloride concentrations
measured in 1996 compared to our recent concentrations. With the exception of SMW4,
the chloride concentrations have remained similar.

Since the new permit was issued in July 2019, no effluent has been applied to spray field
SP10. The data from temporary monitoring wells SP9B and SP10 show that
concentrations of TDS and chloride have attenuated to less than the groundwater standard
in this location. Although no sampling data was collected from spray field SP 10 while it
was in use, this data suggests that attenuation of contaminants could happen fairly rapidly
once the application of effluent has halted.
The results of laboratory analysis of the groundwater sample from SWM19 were
determined to be unreliable and were not considered in this assessment. This monitoring
well has a history of poor yield and inconsistent data. Field measurements of the
groundwater sample from SMW19 showed a specific conductivity of 321 uS/cm which
was also confirmed by the laboratory. The laboratory reported a TDS of 4,900 mg/L and
a chloride value of 270 mg/L. The standard method for TDS requires that the water
sample be prepared by filtration through a 3 micron filter. A known volume of the water
is then evaporated to dryness and the residue is weighed to determine the mass of the
dissolved solids. During preparation of the groundwater sample, the laboratory noticed
that particles smaller than 3 microns were passing through the filter due to the observed
coloration of the filtered water. Clay minerals are not dissolved ions but are small
aluminum silicate minerals approximately 4 to 2 microns in size. The low specific
conductivity of the sample at 321 uS/cm would suggest a TDS in the range of 200 to 400
mg/L and not the 4,900 mg/L that was reported.

5.0 SUMMARY
In Sherrill's opinion, data from the spray field assessment supports;
• The spray fields are operating as designed to attenuate contaminants within the
permit specified compliance boundaries. An exceedance at compliance boundary
was observed in the northwest and southeast but the contaminants appear to be
well contained within the property boundary.
• The shallower depth to bedrock at spray fields SP2 and SP3 along with the
present topography suggests that the upper interval of soils were removed at some
time in the past. Due to the shallower depth to the weathered mudstone bedrock
at spray fields SP2 and SP3, these two spray fields appear to have less capacity
for infiltration and dissipation as compared to the thicker more permeable soils of
the other spray fields.
• Since the new permit was issued in July 2019, no effluent has been applied to
spray field SP10. The groundwater data at spray field SP10 show that
concentrations of TDS and chloride have attenuated to less than the groundwater
standard. Although no sampling data was collected from SP10 while it was in
use, this data suggests that attenuation of contaminants could happen fairly
rapidly once the application of effluent has stopped.
• TDS and chloride concentrations do not appear to be accumulating as values
detected in 2004 are similar to present conditions in 2019.

B The analyte was detected in the associated method blank.
D The sample was analyzed at dilution.
J The reported value is between the laboratory method detection limit (MDL) and the laboratory method
reporting limit (MRL), adjusted for actual sample preparation data and moisture content, where applicable.
U The analyte was analyzed for but not detected to the level shown, adjusted for actual sample preparation
data and moisture content, where applicable.
E The concentration indicated for this analyte is an estimated value above the calibration range of the
instrument. This value is considered an estimate.
MRL Method Reporting Limit. The MRL is roughly equivalent to the practical quantitation limit (PQL) and is
based on the low point of the calibration curve, when applicable, sample preparation factor, dilution
factor, and, in the case of soil samples, moisture content.
PQL PQL: Practical Quantitation Limit. The PQL presented is the laboratory MRL.
N The analysis indicates the presence of an analyte for which there is presumptive evidence (85% or greater
confidence) to make a "tentative identification".
P Greater than 25% concentration difference was observed between the primary and secondary GC column.
The lower concentration is reported.
[CALC] Calculated analyte - MDL/MRL reported to the highest reporting limit of the component analyses.
Q-01 Analysis performed outside of method - specified holding time.
QM-07 The spike recovery was outside acceptance limits for the MS and/or MSD. The batch was accepted based
on acceptable LCS recovery.
FINAL This report relates only to the sample as received by the laboratory, and may only be reproduced in full.

FLAGS/NOTES AND DEFINITIONS
1
QM-12 Precision between duplicate samples was outside acceptance limits.
FINAL This report relates only to the sample as received by the laboratory, and may only be reproduced in full.
