Your insights are right on the mark, the grass is providing much more blade and less runners. Also the color has darkened considerably. have another problem that is much more serious, the field at the Spring lake plant is killing everything 1 plant. The coastal (I think Tifton44) which was sprigged just a few years ago, started receding and has almost disappeared in the last 2 years. this summer I planted Sudan grass, variety: Super Grazer It all germinated, but immediately some started to die out. Some areas grew rapidly to as much as 3 feet tall than started to die.- Something in the soil is killing everything but' some of the weeds. Would you mind taking a look at the field? I welcome your recommendations. Thank you, Dave Chatellier In a message dated 5/27/2015 11:43:55 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, iim.barberncdenr.gov writes: 1 Mr. Chatellier; The regional agronomist for Harnett County is Don Nicholson. He can be contacted at 919-498-0504. Mr. Nicholson should be a good resource in providing assistance with changing over your centipede pastures to bermuda or whatever future crop(s) you wish to establish. I've also attached a couple of documents that address centipede grass in general. In speaking with several folks, centipede doesn't need much in the way of nitrogen (as noted in the attached documents, 0.50 lbs/1000 ft2 = 22 lbs of N per acre, reduced to 16.50 lbs/acre due to grazing). Also the Town of Spring Lake material is lime stabilized, which will typically have a pH between 8 to 10 when land applied. The material will undoubtedly raise the soil pH above the range in which centipede thrives (5.2 to 5.5 pH). Lastly, the phosphorus in the Spring Lake material will also have an effect on the centipede. Dori Nicholson, may have better insights and/or explanations than I can provide. If you have any questions or wish to discuss the Spring Lake material, please call me at 910-433-3340 or email me. If you or Spring Lake need a signed original for your files; please request such from David Goodrich in central office permitting. A couple of issues that do need attention with respect to the Spring Lake residuals programs are as follows: 1). The Calvin Brinkley field identified in the Attachment "B" as 3-2 (and possibly 3=1 & 4-2) has been sold to developers for the construction of a Wal-Mart shopping center. Earth work is under way currently in field 3-2. The,Division is not sure about the impacts to fields 3-1 and 4-2 (whether or not they also have been sold for development). With_that said; all fields that have been sold and are not available for land application need to be removed from the permit (Attachment "B") and the acreage available corrected: If fields have been sold; but are still available to Spring Lake, then new landowner agreement forms need to be executed and submitted to the Division; 2). Back in 2007/2008 the Tom Brooks farm was added to the Spring Lake program during the tenure of Daniel Gerald as public works director. In reviewing the annual reports from 2009 to the 2014; there hasn't been much, if any, application to the Tom Brooks farm fields. Field 2-7 was removed due to the construction of apartments to the north of the field (see attached email). Statements have been made in the past the that Tom Brooks farm was "not available". With the need to remove field 3-2-(8.20 acres) at a minimum and possibly fields 3-1 & 4-2 (an additional 9.40 acres); if the Tom Brooks farm fields are truly "not available", then the total acreage Spring Lake has for land application would be around 26 acres. The Fayetteville office is aware that VeridianResiduManagement has added Spring Lake to their permit (WQ0035881). Based on'my site visit to the proposed acreage to be.dedicated to be used for the Spring Lake residuals under the-Veridian permit; the proposed farm had approximately 7 acres of useable land (bermuda hayfield) at the time of my visit, but it even had potential nutrient reductions due to poultry litter intended to be applied by the landowner (see attached email Viridian Residuals Management). What does all this gibberish mean; it means that Spring Lake needs to update their Attachment "B" to accurately reflect the acreage available to the Town for the application of their residuals by removing the acreage that has been sold for development and any acreage that is not available due to landowner restrictions. If Spring Lake wishes to add acreage to maintain their current Attachment "A" maximum dry tons; both the removal and addition can be handled with a major modification to the Division. Spring Lake has in the past used Veridian and McGill Environmental to de -watered residuals and compost at either the Delway or Moncure sites. If you or Spring Lake have any questions or need additional, information, please contact me at 910-433-3340 or email me.
