Following are details of a wastewater incident that occurred at approximately 10 AM on
Friday, September 16, 2022, at Darling Ingredients, Inc. — Rose Hill Division ("Facility"). This
report serves as the 5 day written communication required under the Facility's Spray
Irrigation Permit, WQ0000485.
At approximately 10:00 AM, it was discovered that there had been a structural failure in the
cooling tower at the Facility resulting in a collapse of the media. As a result, treated recycled
wastewater, which is run through the cooling tower, escaped onto the ground and entered
the stormwater ditch that leads to Outfall 4. Upon discovery, the equipment was immediately
shut down to stop the flow. The amount of treated water that escaped is unknown. Outfall 4
is in a low-lying area adjacent to a swamp that exhibits very little flow. We anticipate that the
water that escaped has remained locally adjacent to the stormwater outfall. The water that
escaped is fully treated wastewater recycled for reuse in the plant for washdown and for
process water demands. Due to the nature of the water, it is not expected that there were
any adverse environmental impact and the report was made in an abundance of caution
under WQ0000485 Condition IVA3.
The initial verbal notification of this event was made to the Wilmington Regional Office at
approximately 5:20 PM on September 16, 2022, under DEQ Incident No. 20220916\08. As a
corrective action, the damaged media was replaced in the affected cell of the cooling tower.
