Subject: SR 2610 (Wilkes) Archaeology Review
On 3/28/20141 was assigned the archaeological review of the improvements to SR 2610 (Greenberry Lane) in
Wilkes County. (We assigned the project PA# 14 -03- 0018.) The goal of the review is to evaluate the project's
potential to impact archaeological sites, and to give you.a recommendation within 30 days.
The first step is to conduct background research to see if there are any previously recorded archaeological
sites within the Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.), whether the A.P.E. has been included in a previous
archaeological survey, and /or whether the A.P.E. has already been reviewed by the State Historic
Preservation Office (HPO).
The second step is to examine topographic maps, soil maps, and any design information you provide in
order to evaluate whether there is a low, moderate, or high probability for archaeological sites within the
A.P.E.
c
. The third step is to recommend either No Survey or Survey, and send you a form that documents the
decision - making process.
The Request for Cultural Resources Review form provided enough information for me to get started. The
project is State - funded, will require Federal permits, and will not require any easements. The design plans show
the A.P.E. is mostly within the existing r /w. The date needed is listed as June 1, 2014.
I did the background research for the project on 4/4/2014. Based on that I recommend an archaeological survey
of the project. My goal was to send you a Survey Required form by 4/25/2014. 1 don't think I will be able to send
you a Survey Required form, but will do archaeological survey this Wednesday- Thursday.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
