Dear Mr. Wanucha:
The purpose of this letter is to initiate project scoping with regulatory and resource agencies and other
interested parties. Vaughn & Melton Consulting Engineers has been retained by the North Carolina
Department of Transportation to perform the project development, environmental and engineering
studies for the replacement of Bridge #131 over Flat Shoal Creek on SR 2018 (Long Hill Road) in Surry
County. During construction traffic will be detoured along Ararat Long Hill Road, Old US 52 South,
Ararat Road, and Long Hill Road. The project will be built on a combination of NCDOT right of way or
through private property easements. The length of the project is approximately 0.09 miles. There is
agricultural and residential land use throughout the project area. 404/401 permitting may be required
for this project.
Attached is an aerial map and a topographic map for your review. We invite you to review the attached
project information and identify any issues and their scope that should be considered in project
planning and the environmental document. The US Army Corps of Engineers is the lead federal
agency. Your comments will be used in the preparation of a State environmental planning document.
Your comments are requested by November 4, 2022, to allow for consideration during the planning of
this project.
