Hi Hannah,
Per our conversation this morning, I wanted to send along turbidity readings from 2 locations taken
October 6th and October 7th (today). See below and the attached sheet. The measurements show
that the levels are coming down, but slowly.
Samples taken 7:00 AM Oct 6th
Discharge into JS - 311 NTU
JS @ US17/Culvert (leaving site) - 236 NTU
Samples taken 7:00 AM Oct 7th
Discharge into JS - 186 NTU
JS @ US17 Culvert leaving site - 144 NTU
Also, please see attached my photos taken today. In addition to the items that we discussed, they
are pumping out of the ditch into a silt bag (to reduce the amount of water still draining from the
ditch into the JS). The silt bag is located far from the JS. Also, they are investigating how floc logs
may be used in the basin (or as the water comes into the basin from the pit) to reduce the turbidity.
We will continue with updates.
If you would like to visit the project next week, please let me or Sean know. Thanks,
Anneliese

Good morning Anneliese,
Thanks for this report, I’ll add this information to the project file. My training went a bit late
yesterday, but I’ll try to give you a call on a break today to further discuss the options they’re
considering.
Hannah

Subject: FW: Borrow Pit "G" Turbid Discharge
Hi Hannah,
At the R-3300B field review today, we visited Site 19, at a location upgradient from the existing
culvert at US 17. Although the jurisdictional stream in this location will be impacted by the project,
it is still flowing and has been isolated from the project by EC measures. Yesterday afternoon
turbidity in the stream was noted and therefore pumping to the stilling basin for Pit G was turned
off. It seems that the layer that was reached in excavation of the pit caused turbidity that was not
being treated by the basin. The water leaving the basin flows through a wooded wetland and then
eventually to a ditch which takes it to the JS stream. The turbidity is mixing with the water in the
stream at this location as we could see clear water up gradient from the ditch. Please see the
attached marked-up permit drawing sheet 120 which shows the turbidity readings at several
locations at Site 19. Also attached is the data sheet with the turbidity readings upstream
(background) and the numbers from the borrow pit.
As Ben Meyer notes in his email below, they have stopped all pumping to the basin (from the pit)
and also stopped all discharge from the pit. They are considering other options to deal with the
turbidity, also noted in Ben’s email.
We walked to the outlet of the culvert under US 17, to the (in line) pond behind the Andrew’s
Mortuary building, and also to the outlet of culverts that carry the stream under Annonale Trace and
the stream/pond also looked turbid at these locations.
Please let me or Sean know if you need any additional information or if you’d like to visit the site.
We will keep you updated.
Thanks,
Anneliese

Anneliese,
Below and attached are the results of the turbidity meter readings from the Pit G discharge issue.
We have stopped all discharge and pumping any remaining water out of the from Pit G sediment
basin. Discussions of using sediment bags, teared stilling basins, and other options are being
discussed. Let me know if there is any additional information you need from us.
Cheers,
Ben
