Subject: RE: Cox Rd bridge replace Alan, The CSR for the R.69 bridge replacement over Cox Road was prepared by Jerry Lindsey of the NCDOT (attached .pdf), and he determined the use of the double corrugated steel pipes was proper for this bridge replacement. Generally, these small bridges with vertical abutments cannot be replaced with the same length bridge because of the required setbacks and the spill-thru abutments. Therefore, it is not economical to build a large bridge for a small tributary crossing. Also, the roadway geometry and the topography has caused some constraints that are better addressed by the use of the double pipes. At your request, we can ask Jerry Lindsey of the NCDOT if we can add a sill to the high flow pipe to maintain the low flow channel through one pipe without compromising the hydraulic design. The diagram doesn’t show a bench for one of the pipes. 1 Currently an 18 ft span, but the stream isn’t that big. It should be able to flow through a single pipe under typical flow Thanks.
