Inspection Summary:
A routine compliance inspection of the Darling Ingredients (formerly Valley Proteins) wastewater treatment and spray
irrigation disposal system was conducted on September 27, 2022. The purpose of the inspection was to verify that the
facility is operating in compliance with the conditions specified within Permit W00000485. Corey Lanier, operator for the
system was present during the inspection and was very helpful providing assistance throughout the inspection and follow-up.
The facility is a rendering plant located at 469 Yellow Cut Road, Rose Hill, NC. The wastewater system is permitted for the
treatment of up to 350,000 gallons per day. The system includes:
• 0.084 MG process wastewater EQ tank
• 1.5 MG anaerobic reactor tank (constructed, but inactive)
• dissolved air flotation unit (DAF)
• 3.5 MG aeration basin with surface aerators
• 1.72 MG complete mixed activated sludge (CMAS) basin with jet aerators
• DAF clarifier cell
• three irrigation storage lagoons (two 2.9 acre and one 4.65 acre)
• 0.35 MGD reverse osmosis system for internal process wastewater recycle
• hexane extraction system
• sodium hypochlorite feed system at irrigation pump station
• spray irrigation fields 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 totaling 79 acres
Sanitary wastewater generated from the bathroom facilities at the plant flows into the Town of Rose Hill sewer collection
system. Discussions are underway to connect to the Town of Wallace to receive flow from the industrial wastewater plant in
times of need (upsets, wet irrigation fields, etc.).
During the recent inspection, freeboard in all the lagoons were well below two feet.
Regarding the groundwater monitoring program, sampling results have indicated consistent exceedances of TDS and
chloride limits in samples obtained from monitoring wells MW-10A and MW-14A. Site map indicates these wells are located
within the designed sprayfields. Site inspection confirmed that these wells are in very close proximity to several spray
heads. Due to landscape position, property lines, and ditches, it seems impractical to relocate these wells further away
from the sprayfield. Therefore, it was recommended to limit or discontinue use of several spray irrigation heads that are
immediately adjacent to these wells. Please note that this slightly reduces the designed acreage available for irrigation and
associated nutrient/hydraulic loading.
Records were readily available for review, well organized and complete. The facility is deemed compliant with Permit
WQ0000485. Please review the comment sections of the inspection report for more details.
