November 2012 Groundwater Sampling Event Clement Pappas 125 Industrial Park Road Hendersonville, North Carolina Dear Mr. Kehoe: R E:C, E ii.V- -,-Jluif bi s Altamont Environmental, Inc. (Altamont) conducted a groundwater sampling event. at your facility on . November 7, 2012. A site location map is included as Figure 1. Altamont conducted1he groundwater sampling event in accordance with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) spray irrigation system permit ndmber.WQ0004797 (permit issued December 29, 2006 and . reissued on October 12, 2012). Altamont collected groundwater samples from six monitoring wells: MW-2R, MW-4, MW-5, MW-6, MW-7R,. and MW-8. Monitoring well MW-7R was installed on June 28, 2012 to replace MW-7, which was destroyed in June 2012 by field equipment. Monitoring well MW=7 was also abandoned on June 28, 2012. The locations of the monitoring wells are shown on Figure 2 (attached). Altamont submitted the groundwater samples to Pace Analytical Services (Pace), a North Carolina certified laboratory, for analysis of the parameters specified in the permit. A representative from DENR, Mr. Jonathan Stepp, was on -site and collected turbidity split samples from the monitoring wells. Table 1 summarizes the current and historical laboratory analytical results for microbiology and wet chemistry. Table 2 summarizes the current and historical laboratory analytical results for volatile organic compounds. -During this sampling event, the total organic carbonconcentrations were in excess of the permit limit in MW-213, MW-4, MW-7R and ,MW-8. The fecal coliform concentrations were in excess of the permit limit in MW-4 and MW-6. All other parameters analyzed were below permit'limits and North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 15A, Subchapter 2L Standard (21L Standard), effective January 2010. Fecal coliform concentrations decreased in MW-6 and MW-8 since the May 2012 sampling event. The fecal coliform concentrations detected in MW-4 are the same as -concentrations detected in the May 2012 sampling event. Samples collected from monitoring wells MW=5,.MW-6, MW-7R, and MW-8 contain elevated laboratory reporting limits due to high turbidity and color in the groundwater samples. Therefore, the laboratory used a different analytical method for fecal coliform from the previous.event. The most probable number (MPN) method was used.which counts the number of positive cells in a grid -like chamber, and results are derived from of a statistical table, for a MPN result. According to the laboratory there is no difference in results in the MPN versus the colony forming units (CFU) analyses. The total organic carbon concentrations in MW-5 and MW-6 hav d since.the last sampling event: The concentration detected in MW-2R, MW74, MW-7R (as,corylpared fo - MW-8 increased since the May 2012 sampling event and remain above the associated.Or,Fu Ilbll it. b 2013 /on PA R\Clement Pappas\Reports\2012\November 2012\Cover Letter_November.Doc° Si Mr. Blake Kehoe December 18, 2012 Page 2 of 2. Table 2 summarizes the current and historic laboratory analytical results for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Concentrations of tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, and cis-1,2-dichloroethene were detected in ,excess of the 2L Standard in MW-5. The VOC concentrations have decreased since the previous sampling . event in November 2011. All other parameters analyzed were below 2L Standards. Table 3 summarizes the current and historical groundwater elevations. All of the monitoring well's concrete pads and top of the well casings elevations were resurveyed by Wes Cole Land Surveying, PA on November 21, 2012. The new elevations are reflected on Table 3 and on Figure 2. In accordance with the spray irrigation permit, Clement Pappas is required to submit by December 31, 2012 (on or before the last working day of the month following the sampling month) to the DENR the following: 0 Laboratory analytical report and chain -of -custody form (Attachment A); the well sampling logs and equipment documentation and instrument calibration data.sheet is also included (Attachment B) • DENR GW-59A—Compliance Report Form (Attachment C) • DENR GW-59—Groundwater Quality Monitoring Compliance Report Forms (Attachment D) Altamont proposes to complete the next scheduled groundwater sampling event in May 2013. The spray irrigation permit expires on November 30; 2015. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned at (828) 281-3350. This table only includes compounds that were detected above the laboratory method detection limit since the sampling event in November 2002. 2. The complete suite of compounds analyzed can be found in the individual analytical reports. 3. pg/L = micrograms per liter. 4. 2L Standard from North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 15A, Subchapter 2L, January 2010. 5. Numbers in bold indicate exceedance of standard. 6. In accordance with Spray Irrigation Permit Number W00004797, only the samples collected during the November Sampling Events are analyzed for volatile organic compounds with one exception (see note 7). 7. In accordance with the Compliance Evaluation Inspection letter issued by Ms. Beverly Price of the DENR, Division of Water Quality (DWQ) on April 27, 2007, volatile organic compounds and semivolatile organic compounds were sampled during the May 2007 sampling event. 8. Napthalene wasdetected in MW-6 for the first time at a concentration of 2.2 pg/L during the November 5, 2002.sampling event, which is below the 2L Standard of 6 pg/L. 9. 1,1,2-trichloroethane was detected in MW-5 for the first time on November 20, 2010 at a concentration of 8.0 pg/L, which exceeds the North Carolina Interim Maximum Allowable Concentration of 0.6 pg/L. 10.Chloroform was detected for the first time in MW-5 at a concentration of 31.3 pg/L during the November 2011 sampling event, which is below the 2L Standard of 70 pg/L.
