Sanitary Sewer Overflows- July 2022
Collection System Permit No. WQCS00021
Wilson Collection System
Wilson County
Mr. Vinson,
Incident # 202201157-On Friday July 22, 2022 at 7:30 AM, the water infrastructure department became
aware of a sanitary sewer overflow on the sewer outfall near 3527 NC Highway 42 W, Wilson, NC. The
cause of the overflow was pipe failure. Crews were dispatched, a temporary bypass was immediately
put into operation and within thirty minutes, the overflow had stopped. Crews then spent
approximately eight hours cleaning the area by pumping residual sewer back into the system, removing
solids, and spreading lime in the affected area. The cost of repairs and cleanup was approximately
$3,000.
In May of 2022, Phase 1 of the Upper Bloomery Swamp Outfall replacement was completed. The 18-inch
sewer main was upgraded to 24 inch, with an approximate cost of $800,000. Phase 2 has been designed
and is awaiting funding.
An estimated 13,000 gallons was spilled with approximately 700 gallons reaching surface waters.
Incident # 202201186- In addition, on Tuesday July 26, 2022 at 8:30 AM, crews were dispatched to a
sanitary sewer overflow at the 600 block of Park Avenue W., Wilson NC. The cause of the overflow was
flushable wipes and rags. Within 30 minutes, the overflow was stopped by using a flusher truck. Over
the next four hours, crews flushed storm drains and the creek with potable water until the creek
cleared. They also performed cleaning and maintenance on all sewer lines in the area. Total cost of
cleanup and maintenance was approximately $1,000.
The City distributes FOG materials to residents bi annually to educate the public on what should not be
introduced into the sewer system. Crews periodically monitor this area for other Msues and perform
maintenance as needed.
An estimated 300 gallons overflowed with 300 gallons also reaching surface waters.
