The original design (attached) proposed the use of a series of steep boulder sills to set and maintain grade within the reconstructed channel from the existing stormwater outfall to UT1 downstream. After the contractor had cleared the existing vegetation within the work area around SD-400 and I was, for the first time, able to see the existing channel and stormwater outfall clearly, I was immediately worried about the future vertical and lateral stability of the reconstructed channel if the design proceeded as proposed. Below is a brief discussion of the field changes to the design. The six proposed boulder sill have been re -configured to create a series of three boulder cascades upstream of the proposed angled log riffle. No additional material will be necessary for construction of the proposed field changes. The proposed boulder cascades will have greater structural stability as the are to be constructed at a more gradual slope and can be constructed in such a way that water is directed towards the center of the channel and away from the constructed side slopes. The proposed field modifications will also allow for construction of longer scour pools at the base of each cascade for energy dissipation. Another driver behind the field changes was the discovery of an existing bedrock seam at the downstream end of the existing channel. The exposed bedrock is located approximately 1.5' below the existing grade shown on the surveyed stream profile and would have made construction of proposed boulder sills 5 and 6 nearly impossible. The revised profile (see the revised plan sheet SS1.09 attached) shows the tail of the angled log riffle tying into the head of the exposed bedrock seam. The bedrock extends to the bed elevation of UT1 downstream, so there is no worry of vertical instability of the channel downstream of the bedrock. If you have any questions or comments please reach out.
