Mr. Spicer:
On August 17, 2022, this Office received a complaint of sheen and/or paint -like substance on
the water surface of a cove on Lake Hickory. The complaint was investigated by Mr. Roberto
Scheller of this Office on August 18, 2022 @ 09:00 am. At the time of investigation, a film
like sheen was found on the water surface of cove at the subject address. The sheen had an
appearance of waterproofing or waterproof stain. Petroleum test strips were used to
determine if the sheen has a petroleum component such as gasoline, oil, or diesel fuel. The
petroleum test strips did not give a positive test result.
The area around the entrance of the cove and upwind of cove was reviewed for possible
sources of the sheen. At the time of the site investigation, it was not possible to determine
the origin. It is suspected that sheen is the result of over spray from waterproofing docks.
