Monroe, Union County, North Carolina General Permit Number: NCG06000 Dear Sir/Madam: Per the requirements of General Permit No. NCG060000, enclosed are two copies of the monthly discharge report for outfall #007 at the Tyson Farms, Inc. (Tyson) facility in Monroe, NC. On December 8, 2021 a sample event took place at all three facility outfalls for the required constituents. At the time, Tyson sent samples to Environmental Chemists, Inc. rather than the lab we traditionally use, (PAR laboratories) due to the hold time for fecal samples and transportation logistics. Sample results showed that Outfalls 7 and 10 exceeded benchmark requirements for Fecal Coliform. Environmental Chemists used method, SM 9222 D 2015 MF, while PAR laboratories uses SM 9222 D 2006. Historical data show that Outfalls 7, 9, 10 do not typically have benchmark exceedances for Fecal. Tyson believes these results are a lab error due to the lab's selected standard method. Environmental Chemists denied our request to resample using the requested sampling method, SM 9222 D 2006. Split samples were sent for analysis, aside from fecal coliform, to compare Environmental Chemists' results to other certified labs in the area. Data showed that Environmental Chemists' results were one hundred times higher than the other two labs. Comparative results can be provided if necessary. Tyson will not use Environmental Chemists for analysis of future sample events. Attached are the results from the December 8, 2021 sampling event.
