Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) currently owns and operates the following assets associated with
permit number WQ0029364: 1,547 linear feet of 8-inch gravity sewer, an 80 gallon per minute (gpm) duplex
submersible pump station, and 75 linear feet of 4-inch force main.
As a modification to permit number WQ0029364, PTI plans to modify the existing pump station and replace
the existing force main. No new flow is being permitting as part of this modification.
The modification to the existing pump station will involve lowering the rim elevation. The existing pumps
will remain in service.
The new force main will be approximately 678 lineal feet of 4-inch pipe. It will discharge to a different
manhole within the same gravity sewer system further downstream than the one the existing force main
currently discharges into.
The modifications noted above will change the hydraulics of the system such that the operating point for the
existing pumps will move to the right on the pump curve and the pumping rate will increase from 80 gpm to
approximately 210 gpm. The attached calculations show that the existing wetwell has enough capacity to
maintain acceptable cycles in the wetwell at the new pumping rate once the float settings are adjusted.

Ben Koski and Colleen Brophy from WK Dickson visited the PTI pump station site for a draw
down test on February lst, 2021 and met PTI operations personnel to assist. Additionally,
Darrell Gettys from Brittain Engineering, Inc. joined the site visit to evaluate the existing
electrical equipment and how the existing electrical service is routed to the pump station.
The evaluation of the electrical equipment from Brittain Engineering, Inc. deems the electrical
equipment as fair and can be reused for the project. The project site electrical service is served
off of the main service for either the Hertz or Samaritan's Purse buildings, which will be
demolished as part of this project. Therefore, the site will be served from a new electrical service
that will need to be coordinated with construction sequence of the project and electrical
equipment will need to be relocated.
There are two existing submersible pumps at the pump station, Flygt Model NP 3102
Adaptative MT 60 Hz, 465 impeller and Flygt Model NP 3102 MT 60 Hz, 465 impeller. What
was referred to in the field as Pump 1 is the older pump but was recently removed and leaned.
Pump 2 was recently replaced in August of 2020. The pump curve for Pump 1 can be seen in
Figure 1 and the pump curve for Pump 2 can be seen in Figure 2.
For all of the pump draw down tests there was no inflow into the wet well. Both pumps turned
on for the draw down tests, but Pump 2 did not reduce the total volume in the wet well. Pump
2 turned on and the water in the wet well could be seen to move around but the total water in
the wet well did not decrease. WK Dickson and the maintenance personnel did not know the
reason. WK Dickson thinks it could either be a clog or the pump is not seated properly. WK
Dickson recommends removing and cleaning the pump to see if there is a clog and seating the
pump back correctly. Once more information is known to why the pump was not performing,
WK Dickson can make a final recommendation on Pump 2.

Based upon the conclusions of the site visit, WK Dickson recommends the following for the
pump station site. The electrical equipment on site can be reused and will have to be relocated
during the grading portion of the project. Additionally, the new electrical service will have to be
coordinated with the construction sequence. The lower portion of the existing wet well that
remains undisturbed during grading will be reused and reconfigured for the new finished
elevation by removing some of the riser sections and resetting the top. The existing valve vault,
force main, pump guide rails, and other appurtenances will be removed and replaced.
WK Dickson recommends that Pump 1 can be reused, and that Pump 2 should be removed,
cleaned, and the pump to be seated back correctly. If Pump 2 appears to be functioning normal
after this maintenance, WK Dickson recommends a second draw down test to verify the
pumping capacity and operational integrity of the pump in order to make a final determination
on whether or not it can be reused. If Pump 2 does not work after this maintenance, then WK
Dickson recommends additional investigation and a Xylem representative involvement for
additional assistance from the manufacturer.
