Civitan Park Wetland Restoration Project Field Operations/Stormwater
PROJECT DESCRIPTION/JUSTIFICATION
The Civitan Park Wetland is a municipally -owned stormwater control measure (SCM) located directly adjacent to Salem Creek, which is biologically -impaired due to fecal coliforms. The wetland
allows for natural predation of fecal coliforms, thus reducing pollutant loading to Salem Creek. In addition, the wetland filters nutrients and soil particles from the upland area of Winston-Salem State
University. The reduction of fecal coliform waste loading is a requirement of the city's Stormwater NPDES permit, within the Total Maximum Daily Loading section. Since no maintenance activities
have been performed since 2008, the wetland will need to completely restored to its original engineered state. Once restored, maintenance activities will need to performed on an annual basis - funds
will be secured from the Stormwater Division's operating budget.
